Do people still play miniature golf? We’ve got so many gizmos and gadgets to distract us in our own homes these days, it’s a wonder anyone still pays money to hit a ball into a fiberglass clown’s mouth. While Mini-Putt doesn’t have the colorful and often surreal obstacles that make put-put so absurd, it does satisfy the urge to hit balls into holes and it preserves at least some vestige of a cultural phenomenon soon to go the way of drive-in cinemas.

Woah, we’ve gotten to the postmodern phase of flash game history where social commentary, appropriation of ironic DIY style, and surrealist absurdity are the order of the day. That said, Jason Nelson’s i made this. you play this. we are enemies. is pretty fun, if you manage to see through the frenetic aesthetic to figure out what’s going on.
Let’s see if the man is such a lame duck after all. Check out the league table below the game – it would seem even his own people aren’t altogether happy with him (well, duh). I’m averaging 13, and every hit is providing a nice little pick-me-up for the end of the week.

California-based drums-bass-piano trio Topaz Rags may or may not have tumbled out of a desert roadhouse, but their sound evokes the kind of gleefully sinister goings-on you might imagine beneath thrumming bug zappers and a flickering neon glow after the bartender has locked the front door and Bubba has donned his purple cloak.

Mikael Alacoque rips familiar and nostalgic objects to the core to create a new sinister image sculptured with abstract moulding techniques. His dead dogs, in particular, have fantastic symbolism, with ice-cream smashed on their little heads. Alacoque is certainly an artist for now and beyond.
I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.

Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
