This collection of gift cards features five unique illustrations, each of which has been inspired by the stories and activities of childhood. It’s the work of Sydney-based Non Fiction, who also produce a range of cool t-shirts and have a weblog ‘of products made by independent Australian artists, designers and craftspeople’.

Sydney’s Laneways: By George! project
The Laneways: By George! project runs in Sydney until January and has seen eight laneways along inner-city George Street transformed with ‘creative, innovative and inspiring high quality temporary artworks, encouraging people to explore these forgotten spaces in the heart of the City. Some of the lanes include a canopy of birdcages and forgotten birdsongs, a prosthetic skin with heartbeat, a pop up kitchen and nightclub, a seven metre bar highlighting climate change and a magical infinite’ forest’ [above]. Sounds like a very clever use of an otherwise indistinct strip of Sydney.

Israeli-artist Yigal Ozeri’s provocative photo-realistic paintings of young women in nature look like a large format photographs, but are actually the work of minute brushstrokes laced together. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, the paintings are exotic portraits of woman enraptured by nature, caught in the lens of the artist’s eye. Mikael Alacoque rips familiar and nostalgic objects to the core to create a new sinister image sculptured with abstract moulding techniques. His dead dogs, in particular, have fantastic symbolism, with ice-cream smashed on their little heads. Alacoque is certainly an artist for now and beyond.

How many times can we play the same song in different settings? Hmmm, I don’t know. But it is a hell of a song, from a hell of a band, as that uniquely English oddity, Jules Holland would no doubt concur.
The sound New Zealand band The Brunettes make is Hallmark card pop — naïve sincerity mixed with low-fi, casual kitsch. Says chief songwriter, Jonathan Bree: ‘You’ll find us somewhere between US punk and just before classic 60s romps’. And so we will.
