Afro Ken
In the fast moving world of Japanese characters, he’s old news. But to me, Afro Ken, a dog with a rainbow-coloured afro, is still my favourite. He is innocent and blameless and always in a good mood. Always willing to try new things, he’s vainly attracted to objects that look like he does. His hair changes to look like these things as he gets close to them. Plus there’s a lot of family and friends with different hairstyles that can keep you occupied longer than Facebook ever could. [see also the Japanese character, Gloomy Bear]

I’ll admit it, on first listen and in a terrible figity mood, i jumped though the tracks, looking for the instant gratification of a big melody before switching to something else. Despite a few negative reviews from others also too quick to judge, the response to this album has been so astoundingly positive, it’s impossible to dismiss. Written after emerging from a period of social isolation and centered around issues of a man and his dying lover, The Antlers’ album, Hospice, slowly creeps up upon the listener. I can tell how much I like a designer by the the speed at which I bookmark their site. With Rob Lowe (aka Supermundane), it was on the home page. That’s a pretty good sign. Supermundane is a multi-disciplined creative who impressively creates all text himself for every project he does. Prepare yourself to be jealous.

I have been to several of Caroline Chen’s exhibits at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. Her sure but guazy painting style reminds me of Wolf Kahn’s work. If painting is feeling, I can imagine her gentle spirit being funneled through brush to canvas. Very fairly priced. And on my short list for acquisitions.
I’ve spent a good deal of time in Nashville lately and had the opportunity to eat in some delicious restaurants there. Meat and threes, Thai, Greek, and more. But topping them all was Mas Tacos. They use deep fried avocados. And the best part is, they have a Winnebago serving it up all over the city.
The Deal sisters have dropped off the indie-rock radar of late, but this clip of them covering Hank Williams’ I Can’t Help It reminds us why we all loved them so much back in the day. Incidentally, the Breeders are set to release their new album, Mountain Battles, in April.
Along with San Francisco and Barcelona, New York is arguably the modern street skating city, both in reality and image.
