The inspiring art and design website, Heavy Backpack have an interesting interview up with one of our favourite illustrators and designers, Steven Harrington, in which he confesses his obsession with thrift stores. ‘I find thrift stores, used book stores and used record stores to be very inspiring. They are like time capsules filled up with forgotten colors, papers, typography, and other interesting objects that evoke a sense of time and place and social context. My Mom used to frequent thrift stores when I was a kid, and I hated them then. But now I like to think of thrift store visits as being right up there next to seeing an interesting art exhibition or reading a good book or hearing a good song’.

I’m a big fan of Fernanda Cohen’s work. The Brooklyn-based illustrator — and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor — has just completed a new series called War of Words which has received two silver medals from the Society of Illustrators of NY and LA, and will be featured in HOW International Design in March. I don’t do yoga. I have nothing against it, but it just seems a little too new agey for me. However, if I do eventually try it, I’d like the instructor to put on Fabio Orsi’s moody, ambient, drone experiments. Using piano, guitar, percussion, field recordings, and various sampled elements, Orsi creates some beautiful, meditative pieces that, while undeniably fruity, are still weird enough to hold my interest.
So I interviewed Bianca, one half of Coco Rosie, the other morning. Love their music: very dramatic, almost operatic in its scale yet imbued with a sense of sonic unease that carries the divine melodies well beyond their maudlin minor key progressions. Read more

We asked Arizona-based artist Joe Sorren what we would have been if he hadn’t been handed the most ridiculously generous serving of artistic talent: ‘Art historian and conservationalist. Or a botanist. Or I’d work with horses. It would be interesting to be behind the scenes in politics, at least for a while. Or maybe a studio musician, or invent games, or a … I would rather paint’. Ah, we agree.
