We love the vivid colours in the Freak La Notte range of t-shirts. The French label’s collection of shirts are like little canvases of super-styled surrealism – bold, elegant, and enchanting.

It goes without saying that Hip Hop has taken a few very low hits in the past decade. Thanks to the likes of 50 Cent and company, it accounts for around 40% of all music sold in America. It’s a huge industry. So where does that leave Hip Hop artists doing something a bit different? And more importantly, what does the tacky 80s sitcom Dynasty and two MCs from Memphis, Tennessee have in common. If you listen to this track you’ll understand why. Lord T and Eloise wear wacky outfits, make crazy music and bring a whole lot of fun back into Hip Hop. What’s more, they’ve started a new genre called ‘Aristocrunk’ and they’re taking it to SXSW this year. Watch out!

Listen to the Lord T and Eloise track, Coup D’etat.

The work of Brazilian illustrator Pablo Fonseca de Pinho has been heavily inspired by character director, Hayao Miyazaki. Fonseca de Pinho moved to San Francisco at the age of fifteen, working as a freelance graphic designer making band logos and company logos. More recently he has progressed to painting characters on canvas. [see also the work of Brazilian design firm, Oestudio]

Lush was one of the best bands to come out of the indie-tastic early ’90s. They set the standard for shoegazey, ethereal pop from the British Isles, and they were about to break big with their 1996 album Lovelife before drummer Chris Acland hanged himself in his parents’ home. The band is a bit of a forgotten gem at this point. Let’s cross our fingers for a reunion.

I love the work of the Montreal-based silkscreening group Seripop. Their choices of color and gritty, imperfect lines give the impression of ‘test-prints’ at first, but with further inspection reveal a definite conscious approach. [see also Lorin Brown]

As pretty as couture lingerie can be, it’s an inexpensive foray into an impractical world. Trends sweep in and out, but, for the whole, lingerie stays frilly, lacey and visible below clothing, forcing women to mark a clear line between underwear (in it’s most literal sense) and lingerie. But the new line by Berlin designer, Matthias Jaschke is something else entirely. Read more

Films are popular primarily because they provide an escape from the drudgery and repetition of everyday life. The characters are then as unrealistic as most of the storylines — too well-dressed, attractive, insightful and witty to be real. With 2 Days in Paris, Marion (Julie Delphy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg) are petty, neurotic and jealous. They have stupid fights, awkward, unfulfilling sex, and are initially difficult to like because they are so visceral. Read more

Writer Warren Ellis and artist Paul Duffield have teamed up for a pretty stunning, albeit mildly cliched webcomic about mysterious survivors in a post-apocalyptic London submerged in water. [see also the artwork of Edwin Ushiro]

A crackling assault of guitars and drums, lyrics that bristle with indignation. Sheffield’s Harrisons are for our era what The Clash were for theirs: a voice of rebellion, masked in four minute pop gems. We spoke recently to drummer Mark White: Aside from Harrisons and Joe Cocker, what else should we know about the creative scene in Sheffield? ‘The best band from Sheffield by far was Pulp. We grew up on them. There’s not really any good music in Sheffield at the minute. I personally don’t even think there was a year or two ago. There’s a good artist called Pete McKee who does retro cartoon pictures. I’ve seen a Wednesday-United one that I’m going to buy’. Read more

So, here’s an idea: ‘I got a writer — a long time partner in collaboration, Katherine Danks — to write me a short story, with the knowledge that I was going to add images to it. I’ve taken the story and produced three separate books — one typographic, one illustrated and one photographic. The exhibition space has three chairs, with a book at each chair. The viewer is invited to sit and read each book, then give feedback on how the different treatments affected their reading of the story’. This is the project of Sydney-based creative Zoe Sadokierski whose ‘Sundays’ exhibition is running during March at the Dab Lab at the UTS gallery space. Read more

Dear Miss Helena, one time host of children’s show Romper Room, you have a lot to answer for. Yes, squeaky clean Miss Helena of wholesome blouse and values, I have not forgotten those childhood years spent patiently glued to the television waiting for you to call out my name through the magic ‘looking glass’ — that portal to ‘good’ children everywhere.
