Gentle Giant
UK’s Gentle Giant are one of the forgotten heroes of ’70s prog rock, but they’re every bit as good as Yes and Jethro Tull. Their complex, intricately structured songs utilized unusual key changes and chord progressions, but retained a pop accessibility with their jazzy guitars, classical strings, and fantastic multi-part vocal harmonies. The band aimed to ‘expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music’, and it drew as much from the rock scene at the time as it did from madrigal music and Renaissance philosophy. The band didn’t survive the punk era, but it represents an under-appreciated period in rock history. [see also the Czech prog rock band, Blue Effect]

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
The work on the Buero NY website is amazing — it’s my art direction obsession! So much work, so many cool clients … what a fantasy.
I don’t do yoga. I have nothing against it, but it just seems a little too new agey for me. However, if I do eventually try it, I’d like the instructor to put on Fabio Orsi’s moody, ambient, drone experiments. Using piano, guitar, percussion, field recordings, and various sampled elements, Orsi creates some beautiful, meditative pieces that, while undeniably fruity, are still weird enough to hold my interest.

Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne
My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
Inside this sea urchin shell is an organic perfume made from grapefruit and basil essential oils. This bottle, designed by Stephanie Simek, is refillable and is packaged in a wooden box decorated with a satin photograph and padded with slices of exfoliating loofah sea sponges.
