Vinicio Capossela
by As a visual artist, I get excited when I see something I’ve never seen before. It applies to music too. I love those who do things others don’t. I fell in love with Italian musician Vinicio Capossela when I picked up his last album L’Indispensabile at Virgin Megastore’s International section in 2003. It is so original and so surprising. Now this for so long almost unknown outside of Italy musician is becoming internationally recognised with his best-selling latest album Ovunoque Proteggi. He is about to undertake a world tour, which I’ve heard will bring him to New York City.

The one evening event Dear Japan has been organized by a group of Japanese artists who live in New York. It features 170 illustrators and fine artists, and all the works are $200 or under. I love the ominous, moody atmosphere of young Swedish-Finnish photographer Martina Lindqvist’s landscape shots. She’s only just graduated from university, but already has the Jerwood Photography Award 2008 under her belt and a spot in the prestigious UK Portfolio Magazine. Much of her work is done in Finland: there’s a real dream-like surreality to the images she captures and a great use of light against dark backdrops. Read more
I originally caught wind of these photos on amazing artist/designer Scott Hansen’s blog. These photos, taken by Danny Lyon in Brooklyn in 1974, have such a gritty, yet nostalgic feel to them. Knuckleheads is a pretty fun little side scrolling game where you’re a pair of Mexican-wrestler-looking things attached to each other by a chain. You swing each other around to move and hit floaty capsule things for points, and you can change the length of the chain to get over various obstacles, but watch out for the bats.
I had the pleasure of seeing Duran Duran play a few weeks back in the balmy drizzle of New York’s Central Park. I always thought the guys had more cheek than they were ever given credit for. But don’t be fooled! For a band so rooted in the immediacy of disposable pop, they wrote some timeless songs, none more so than The Chauffeur.
