Spontaneous, loose and moody, like a hurricane blasting through an art supply store, the work of Washington artist Garric Simonsen is just a little Basquiat — with droll humor mixed up and splattered all over a canvas. I can’t help but chuckle at titles like Damn I Just Ruined My Best Shirt and Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha.
The thing about successful memes is that they generally have no purpose other than to ridicule other people with cruel and derisive humour. Hmmm, probably why we all like them so much.

These ‘manner posters’ appeared in Tokyo subways between 1976 and 1982, informing passengers on subway etiquette and good manners. We’re not sure why it didn’t catch on elsewhere — a colourful and entertaining poster versus a crackly intercom message from a bored driver? Hmm. Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.
Scott Sternberg created the great Los Angeles label, Band of Outsiders, and it’s one of the few labels that fit a little guy like me perfectly. I live in BOO shirts. They are my second skin.
