The Terrordactyls
There’s a simple timelessness about the music of indie duo The Terrordactyls — especially on their new self-titled album. It’s perfect for singing in the shower or humming on the bus. We asked Michael, one-half of the group, if it was a rule of thumb for the band to keep it to first position chords only: ‘Large skips and parallel movement make me uncomfortable. In many keys, it’s a lot easier to maintain decent voice leading in open position on the guitar. Sometimes, I’ll move things around for the sake of tone if we’re recording, but otherwise I don’t really care. It’s gonna sound like shit amplified anyway’. What do you recall in particular about recording [debut album] Hoppy Birthday back in the day and was it an enjoyable experience or a tough learning process — or both? ‘It was really fun. It was before I actually started going to Evergreen for school. I came down to Olympia and we spent the entire night recording in Tyrel’s living room. We eventually broke into the Seminar II building as well as the library building when it got too late to scream in the dorm. I think that Brendhan just climbed in some kid’s window and borrowed his drum to record that CD. It was recorded entirely using the internal microphone in my computer. It was about as fake as recording gets’.

The Presets are a Sydney-based electronic duo, consisting of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes. In September 2005 they released their debut album, Beams, to positive critical response. That same year Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes also toured with The Dissociatives, which is co-fronted by Daniel Johns of Silverchair and Australian dance producer Paul Mac. Johns also played guitar on Presets single Cookie. Hamilton and Moyes are also members of Sydney instrumental group Prop.
