Matt Rota

Once in a while I get completely swamped with deadlines and have to hire assistants. Matt Rota was recommended by a peer I trust and has been a terrific assistant, but I don’t think I can keep hiring him for too long. If you see his work you will know why. He may just be starting out now, but he is destined to be super popular very soon.

Nice doodle. That's a photorealistic line drawing of a cat riding a bicycle, right? You should sign up for our free email newsletter.

Dear Japan art event in New York

Come out to a gallery in Soho, New York, on Saturday afternoon and purchase art for your home for a good cause. The one evening event Dear Japan has been organized by a group of Japanese artists who live in New York. It features 170 illustrators and fine artists, and all the works are $200 or under. It’s a small portion of what most of the participating artists would normally sell their work for. Of course, I am donating for this good cause, too. Read more

BLOW UP: featuring Hanuka, Shimizu, Weber

Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds — Sam Weber (Canada), Yuko Shimizu (Japan), and Tomer Hanuka (Israel) — are meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American aesthetic to examine their new-found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities. Each of the illustrators featured as part of BLOW UP (running at New York’s Society of Illustrators until October 16) created new works to be shown for the first time in this exhibition. Read more

Don’t Shoot the Puppy is one of the more difficult flash games out there, sure to engage you for hours. Strategy is the key, but quick reflexes and a photographic memory don’t hurt either. It’s rare that a computer game challenges the intellect and hand-eye coordination to this extent.

Damn, ten years of playing guitar in loud rock bands, and not once did we have a slamming moshpit like this. Banging heads is so, so fun.

Ok, so this is some clever trick photography by Joseph Ford for French Magazine, Amusement. But heck, why doesn’t someone just go ahead and build one. Kinda what the world needs right now. Right? Right!

We’ve all been there: funny do’s, extreme do’s, do’s that just don’t. Now there’s a website devoted to ridiculing one thing in life that, the older we get, we all wish we had more of. Read more

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.

It’s hard not to sigh at another vector face or skull and diamond combo. I’m guilty of skull overindulgence myself. But Six Letter Word — aka illustrator, Diogo Potes — balances skulls with other macabre themes to create art that actually looks fresh and interesting. Read more
