I was sitting alone in a café in Berlin yesterday, having a beer, when this very unusual and captivating song came on. I literally ran home to download it. I’m so proud to be Australian when I hear something as beautiful as this. The Melbourne group Dead Can Dance deserve more credit in the annuls of popular music history. One of the most intriguing stories I’ve come across this year is about a young artist called Yonlu, born Vinicius Gageiro Marques in the town of Porto Alegre, in Brazil. His story is short but fascinating. As it goes, this sixteen year old songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and virtual artist locked himself in his bathroom, signed on to one of the various suicide forums he belonged to on the Internet, and took his own life, remaining online until the very end. After his death, his father went through his computer and found numerous musical creations, including the songs that make up his debut album through Luaka Bop. It’s an amazing listen and very ahead of its time.

Hi,
I was just surfing looking for DCD stuff when I found this blog entry. I should update you: DCD is indead from Melbourne originally but they moved to the UK in 1982. Since the offical split in 1999 (after which a reunion tour was held in 2005) Lisa Gerrard moved back to Australia and Brendan Perry moved to Irland.
reason for my reply is that the voice in this clip (and also the writer of the music and lirycs is not the person in the photograpgh with Lisa that you have put here. BTW you are not the first who mistakenly placed this picture as being ‘Dead can dane’

I don’t know a lot about The Sugars but I like what they do. Their sound is quite rockabilly but quite modern — like White Stripes. They put out a couple of indie singles and I’d really like to find some time to work with them.
The work of French Illustrator Chamo is every bit as fun as her name seems to imply. Employing a bright, candy colored, retro feel, Chamo’s illustrations come off feeling like the ultimate feel good joyride.
While I’m definitely not into the whole Lord of the Rings thing, I’m convinced Tolkien stole his inspiration from Göreme, in Turkey’s central Cappadocia region. After a mammoth volcanic eruption around 2,000 years ago, the landscape eroded to form a series of valleys, filled with peculiar, phallic-shaped tufts that the locals call ‘fairy chimneys’. Early Christians hollowed out the tufts and turned them into houses, churches and monasteries. These days, most of them are still in use and a few have been converted into cute hotels and hostels. If you’re not too claustrophobic, I’d highly recommend doing the hobbit thing and spending a night in one.
An intelligently told, morally complex tale with a raft of unexpected twists, Gone Baby Gone is one of the most original films of recent times. Most films give you a sense of their narrative arc and it is easy to recognise the major plot points. Read more
Having just finished a collaboration with Marchesa, jewellery designer Pamela Love’s gothic-inspired line has been picked up by the likes of Erin Wasson, among other celebrity fans. Referencing both nature and science, Love has created a line that is both rock n’ roll and earthy, with talons, claws, peacocks, rams and bear heads all featuring heavily.
