Control

Based on the book by lead singer Ian Curtis’s wife, Control focuses on the progressive downfall of Joy Division’s enigmatic, depressive and epileptic singer, who ultimately has no control over the fame and success that comes his way, the wife and child he has waiting at home, and the love affair that he can’t deny. Director Anton Corbijn, an infamous rock photographer, has used his mastery over the black and white image and his first hand experience with Joy Division to create an intimate movie of this legendary post-punk 1970s band. This movie is a fluid series of beautiful images, pieced together alongside the tracks of Joy Division, a tragic soundtrack to the life and death of one of the most tragic yet fascinating pop icons of the era.

School of Bauhaus 1934 photoshoot for Isson

This was such a fun shoot! Catherine, my client, and the mind behind Australian sunglass company, Isson, came to me with a new range called Bauhaus. I was instantly excited. While studying architecture in uni, Bauhaus was a constant source of inspiration for me in my designs. We chatted on handsfree for over an hour while I drove down Parramatta Rd in peak hour. We were both on the same page and pumped. Catherine wanted to give me creative freedom, and see what I came up with. Read more

Atonement

Adapted from Ian McEwan’s best selling novel, Atonement is a softly perfumed story of love, passion and jealousy bound within youth. Novice writer, 13-year-old Briony Tallis, fueled by the jealousy of her older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightly) and her lover Robbie’s (James McAvoy) igniting romance, accuses Robbie of a crime he did not commit, leading to his incarceration. This malicious and childish accusation irrevocably changes all their lives forever. Read more

Not that we’re ones to poke fun (gettit?) at the Facebook supremo, but what the hell: M.I.C Gadget did it for us. Though I say, ‘did’. Their cheeky Poking Inventor toy — ‘the next greatest action figure for tech nerds’ — has just been quietly discontinued. We wonder if Zucks got the sooks? Read more

Sydney is not as well known for its great bars as other Australian cities. The city centre is dominated by over-priced style bars, while the suburbs are ruled by beer barns overflowing with terrible music, pokies, and sports. Nestled in the back streets of Surry Hills, surprisingly close to the city, The Cricketer’s Arms bucks the trend, with an open fire-place, great contemporary music selection, comfortable couches, a cosy outdoor area, decent food, free board games, and the laidback vibe that’s now all too rare in Sydney. One of my favourite curated art blogs is Booooooom! The site is based in my backyard of Vancouver and features a wide variety of different visual artforms, whether its paintings, photography, design work, and sometimes even videos. I find that I’m always inspired when I visit this site. I think Jeff, the site’s creator and curator, and I have really similar tastes.

Describing their sound as ‘nihilist suicide pop’, Rome-based quartet Spiritual Front draws immediate comparisons to Nick Cave, but their approach to dark themes have a hint of irreverence — they inject unexpected doo-wop flares and new wave bombast to their atmospheric neofolk. Their latest album, Armageddon Gigalo, is a beautiful and catchy masterpiece for fans of Death In June, Sol Invictus, and even latter-day Duran Duran.

Scott Sternberg created the great Los Angeles label, Band of Outsiders, and it’s one of the few labels that fit a little guy like me perfectly. I live in BOO shirts. They are my second skin.

Never ever, ever, ever, ever park here

Some friendly advice for the neighbours, who simply don’t get it, or street art? You decide which one it is.

Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
