The Hamilton-based line of Get Fighted Clothing has sprouted to support cancer research through the Skate4Cancer initiative. Designer Peter Morris wanted to create his own range and also raise money for cancer research, so he’s linked his t-shirts, hoodies and buttons with the Rob Dyer created Skate4Cancer organization. Dyer has skated across Canada and the United States to raise money for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Hospital and has also held a concert at Toronto’s MOD Club featuring headliner, Dallas Green of City in Colour. In fact, both the label and its beneficiary have been well supported by the music industry, with bands such as Carrion, Three Letter Havoc, The Swiss Army Romance, and Circuit for the Blackout actively involved in the fund raising process for this worthy project. A talent for mixed media and a good eye for detail has won London designer Andy Forshaw clients such as Dazed and Confused, Vice, and TimeOut. He’s just finished illustrating a mammoth book for Bloomsbury UK entitled What On Earth Happened which will be released worldwide this Autumn.
Metronomy are a cool little London-based group headed by producer and remix extraordinaire, Joseph Mount. The sound sits somewhere between Autechre and Vitalic: clanging keyboards and body-gurning beats laced with an undercurrent of ominous electronica. It’s not as inaccessible as much of the more twisted electro-based stuff out there at the moment, although it retains an edge perhaps unpalatable for some ears. Yet there’s a catchiness to it that is clearly roping in the crowds: their live shows are a spectacle, complete with synchronised dancing and flashing costumes. If that floats your boat, they’re playing for free at the Tate Britain, London, on 27 September.
We used to depend on sundials back in the day, but now there are multiple ways to tell the time. And Tokyo Flash has just invented another one. Based on LED technology, these watches are not only stylish but futuristic and wildly innovative. They even have a watch from minimalist designer Naoto Fukasawa that is more than just your basic timepiece. The Tokyo Flash site says that their watches are supposed to ‘resemble the various moods of a human’, and they’re definitely an attention grabber. These are watches to take us right through to the 22nd century.

I love art that scares me a little. Erica Eyres somehow manages to make subtly unnerving drawings of distorted figures using nothing more than a ballpoint pen and a piece of paper. She renders shockingly realistic hair, yet skews the proportions and features of her subjects, exaggerating their expressions and making them look monstrous.
Seriously, nothing beats good old 35mm film. To me photography isn’t about capturing every pore in someone’s face, or even making slick, magazine-ready images. The imperfections in film put just enough distance between the viewer and the moment that allows room for an emotional and nostalgic response. Digital photos are generally so vivid that it eliminates all the mystery of an image. Check out Jeff Luker’s photostream to see what I mean. Read more

Artist Beverly St. Clair has translated the four DNA bases into certain shapes and patterns, which she uses to translate genomes into beautiful quilts.

Dalton Trumbo was the first blacklisted writer to win an Academy Award. However, he could not claim the award until years later because he had been forced to write under a pseudonym. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten and even spent a year in jail as a result of investigations into Communist influences in the motion picture industry. This documentary is fascinating not just for its examination of a bizarre period in American history where fear replaced reason and innocent men were jailed, but also for how Trumbo dealt with these hardships.
