Artists Against War at Society of Illustrators
More than sixty illustrators and graphic artists from America and abroad have banded together for a good cause at New York’s Society of Illustrators to ‘produce works that challenge the self-destructive ignorance, indifference, incompetence and corruption that is the result of US Middle East foreign policy. These works of art give a voice to those whose views are not represented by the mainstream media, as a way to support those most directly affected by the harsh consequences of military combat — the brave men and women who serve their country as well as their family members who must live with the affects of war long after the parades are over’. The show is online until January 26.

Victoria Reynolds’s meat paintings
I look at so much art, it’s rare that I see something that ‘wows’ me. But I love bumping into that rare moment. I was doing photo research (nothing related to meat) and bumped into Victoria Reynolds’ work. WOW. Gross-ugly-beautiful. I especially love the ones in matching meaty looking frames.

If you’re a sucker for good strong figurative work with a flair for the unexpected, you’ll like the work of New York illustrator, Michael Camarra for sure. I’ve known Camarra since our days back at Pratt, when he still painted with a brush and a tube of paint. Now that Camarra has moved on up into the realm of digital painting, I’m amazed at how, incredibly, the digital paintings lose almost none of the raw spontaneity his traditional paintings possessed but instead introduce a somewhat cleaner edge overall, which lends itself to his cleaner graphic sensibilities. Located just off of the J train on the Marcy stop is Marlowe & Sons at 81 Broadway. Whatever the night of the week, this place seems to always be packed. Dimly lit, and intimately laid out, Marlowe & Sons offers a low-key vibe, with a great selections of cheeses and meats, as well as a limited dinner selection. It’s a great place to head to when all you want is to unwind from the frenzy of Manhattan. Consider this your first tasty rest stop in Brooklyn.

I’ve been reading Julia Wertz’s web comic, The Fart Party, which is simply a first person account of her every day life. The artwork is pretty rudimentary, but that works to the comic’s advantage, making it rather accessible and earnest seeming. Updated every few days, it’s not hard to keep up, and you never have to wait long to get your next fix.
Damn, ten years of playing guitar in loud rock bands, and not once did we have a slamming moshpit like this. Banging heads is so, so fun.
