DJ Regal
We like the sound coming from the decks of Sydney-based DJ Regal, who fuses jazz with hip-hop and old school funk to keep dancefloors hopping. The album artwork for his latest release — Loop Dreams — is just as cool, so we asked him about the process behind it: ‘A good friend of mine, Tom, who I’ve known in Sydney since I first came here, is a graphic designer and a major hip-hop head and he helped me to do my cover’. ‘After I found LP sleeves that appealed to me the most, I hit upon the idea of an invented piece of music machinery — basically a device for looping techniques. If you look closely at the cover, it doesn’t actually make sense. It’s a drum machine with tape heads! Hahaha. The kind of “If Only” device that seems totally plausible within a funky deep sleep. Tom took my studio-gear pics and fused the basics from a few different machines and applied them into one whole and placed the device inside a carry box, which really creates the impression it’s real. Hopefully it catches people’s eye and encourages a second look’.

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.
