The Assassination of Jesse James
Nick Cave is a mournful bugger. Not in a dreary, self-indulgent way, but rather in a soulful, uplifting way. Confused? Cave’s music is honest, melancholic, and heartfelt — taking tiny shards of every great melody never written and piecing them all together in a tempestuous mix of piano, guitar, and baritone vocals. Cave’s latest recording is a soundtrack to the movie, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and he’s done it in collaboration with his partner in crime, Warren Ellis — of The Dirty Three fame. It’s a beautiful album, every bit as significant as Cave’s vast back cataloge of work. The CD hits stores on 5th February, which is the same day as the DVD is released, but it’s currently available as a digital download. Ain’t technology a grand thing indeed? Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
