Mad.Elephant
We love the ingenuity of Mad.Elephant’s jewelery designs, which includes items as disparate as ‘chicken bone knucklering, a 22 caliber bullet shell bracelet and a dove’s foot bracelet’. Of her work she says: ‘Art is the filter in my brain that sorts through and deals with all the thoughts in my head which are numerous and sometimes hard to deal with. I heal myself through my art. I found that when I deal with personal issues and painful subject matter, my art is much stronger as well as my concepts. Strife inspires me. Maybe I seek it out in some ways because this is so. Although the healing process is difficult and exhausting, I come out stronger in the end. My jewelry is a perfect manifestation of this process’. ‘I tend to leave tool marks on my metal as I work, leaving a raw and impatient quality behind. I also use a patina to give the pieces an aged feel. I want my jewelry to feel used, old and experienced. The use of natural and found material is ever-present in my work and more often than not, this material is repulsing or offensive to some people. In many ways these materials represent my personality and opinions. Some of these materials include but are not limited to chicken bones, bird feet, bullet shells, shark’s teeth, horse hair, and deer hide’.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Last night, I caught Pagan Fest at B.B. Kings in NYC. I missed the band that I was the most excited to see, T˘r, but Turisas and Ensiferum more than made up for it. Americans have been pretty late to warm up to folk and Viking metal, and bands of this sort almost never tour the States, so it was gratifying to see that the show was sold out, and that the crowd was so exuberant. Illustrator Dallas Clayton has just published an awesome book called, wait for it, An Awesome Book. It’s a ridiculously cute, heart-rending children’s book, encouraging kids and adults alike to never lose our senses of wonder and imagination (psst, it could make a great late gift idea!)
Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.
I got to check out Extra Golden the other night at the Floristree in the H & H Building in downtown Baltimore. Despite a bill of heady, contemplative, experimental music that preceded the DC-based band, the crowd was chomping at the bit to see them when they finally hit the stage well past 1am. It’s still cold and rainy here in Charm City, but these guys made it feel like summer with their sunny blend of Kenyan benga music and guitar-driven psych rock.
