Suffocation
I recently watched the movie Suffocation (Zhixi), which is billed as Mainland China’s first horror movie. The film stars top-tier Chinese actor Ge You, who is beloved all over China for his comedic and bumbling everyman roles. In this film, however, he plays a jet-setting fashion photographer who may or may not have murdered his wife. Terrifying images haunt him as the police discover one body after another washed up on a nearby beach. The film depicts an imaginary luxury condo community inhabited by world-weary, cosmopolitan nouveau riche — they have all adopted the trappings of affluent Western society, perhaps at the cost of their souls. The proficient cinematography creates an eerie, creepy atmosphere, and the subject matter is rather morbid, but the film is hardly frightening (China’s censors still have a tight hold on filmmakers). It is, however, an interesting little treatment of the contradictions in modern China.
