I know several people in Baltimore who have built their own beehives and even small apiaries within city limits in back yards and rooftops. For those who don’t have enough time to make their own, here’s this slick, pre-made one by Philips.

WE'RE THINKING

Herb Lubalin’s typography looks clichéd and a bit played out if you are catching it right now, until you realize that most of the designers riffing on his letters were born after he died. Lubalin’s typography isn’t subtle. That isn’t to say it isn’t well balanced or poorly kerned (it is). It’s more that it is loud, fearless, and clever in ways type hasn’t been before or since. His particular cues are popping up more and more lately in “cutting-edge” graphic design. Avant-garde indeed.

Back in the day, when I was a skinny teenager on the great pedestal of life, I had a real obsession for the understated, low-fi, deliciously melodic and somewhat blurry sounds of the New Zealand Flying Nun bands. I would pool my meagre savings and canvas the local record shops, scouring the racks for the latest cassettes from The Bats, The Chills, The Clean, and, later, The Straitjacket Fits. Read more

WE'RE TRAVELLING TO

Sydney is not as well known for its great bars as other Australian cities. The city centre is dominated by over-priced style bars, while the suburbs are ruled by beer barns overflowing with terrible music, pokies, and sports. Nestled in the back streets of Surry Hills, surprisingly close to the city, The Cricketer’s Arms bucks the trend, with an open fire-place, great contemporary music selection, comfortable couches, a cosy outdoor area, decent food, free board games, and the laidback vibe that’s now all too rare in Sydney. DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop.
