Bongo Flava
MCs across Africa, originally inspired by American hip-hop, are now incorporating their own traditions into their music. In Tanzania, a form known as Bongo Flava has emerged over the past ten years. The style fuses rap with native Tanzanian music (musiki wa dansi and taarab), Bollywood rhythms, and even the occasional flow inspired by French hip-hop. The above video of Zali La Mentali by Prof Jay featuring Juna Nature and Muny is one of the biggest recent hits in the genre.

In the words of its Dutch designer, Oooms, the Roadkill Carpet is a ‘a continuous struggle between attraction and repulsion. It’s a warm, soft, cuddly carpet that attracts you to take a nap on it. But at the same time its a repulsive image of a car-flattened, bloody fox’. Hmm, no wonder we like it so much. Read more
I never played Popopop 1, if there is one, but I can’t imagine a game much more simple than this. Just drop detonating balls next to balls of the same color to pop them. I feel like someone out there is getting way to much pleasure playing this game.
The issue of abortion has hardly ever been represented so honestly by a movie. Knocked Up and Juno gave the pro-choice movement a boost, and of those two, only Juno came close to confronting the issue. In the Princess of Nebraska, the main character suffers through indecision, naivety and turmoil that seem much closer to reality. Read more
This gourmet paint is made by only two dedicated paint makers without fillers, just pigment and oil, like it should be. There is only one store that sells it and it is run out of the Elisabeth Foundation for the Arts building in Chelsea, New York. They have a table set up there so you can play with and mix any of the colours together to see its effects. I usually go to pick one tube up and hang around asking questions to one half of the duo, Gail, and usually leave with five tubes, having learned a lot about the history and the process behind each colour.
Hahahaha! Conan rules, and so do all the gals who look like him. Which is a surprising many, according to this freshly launched Tumblr. Read more
Oh, ok. The Church’s eerily translucent Under The Milky Way has just burst into my headphones like a thousand jolts of sweet pop lightening. It’s nice to know that wistful introspection is only ever but three chords and a melancholic chorus away.

The line, which has a starting price at around fifteen dollars, drops April 19, just in time for Earth Day.

In 2008, graphic designer Becky Edgington and illustrator Sarah Beetson created two limited-edition packs of playing cards featuring images from Beetson’s exhibition, 50 Bucks: Bring On The Sluts. The images were selected from almost 500 small artworks created on moleskine paper, inspired by vintage pornography and a trip to Japan. Read more
