In’t Veld Schokoladen

When my friend, illustrator Monika Aichele comes to visit me from Berlin, she always brings me a box of In’t Veld chocolate. I am a chocolate snob, and let me tell you, their gourmet chocolate is amazing, with fun flavors like goat’s milk and super-dark cacao. The design of the packaging is beautiful too, which is a plus for a design obsessive like me. On the way back from a recent trip to Berlin, I packed my suitcase full of them to share them with my New York friends.

Dear Japan art event in New York

Come out to a gallery in Soho, New York, on Saturday afternoon and purchase art for your home for a good cause. The one evening event Dear Japan has been organized by a group of Japanese artists who live in New York. It features 170 illustrators and fine artists, and all the works are $200 or under. It’s a small portion of what most of the participating artists would normally sell their work for. Of course, I am donating for this good cause, too. Read more

BLOW UP: featuring Hanuka, Shimizu, Weber

Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds — Sam Weber (Canada), Yuko Shimizu (Japan), and Tomer Hanuka (Israel) — are meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American aesthetic to examine their new-found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities. Each of the illustrators featured as part of BLOW UP (running at New York’s Society of Illustrators until October 16) created new works to be shown for the first time in this exhibition. Read more

What do you get when you cross a reclusive former Warhol superstar with a penchant for extravagant couture with something as iconic as a Barbie Doll? You get MDVANII. Make NO mistake about it, the Art Dolls that BillyBoy* creates are not to be referred to as Barbies. Barbie could only ever dream of taking on the many sultry forms that MDVANII has assumed over the years. Read more

French fashion designer and illustrator Cedric Rivrain draws how I’d love to be able to — with amazing attention to detail and patience. He’s designed for Martine Sitbon and John Galliano at Christian Dior and his fashion experience reflects in his work, which has been shown in magazines such as Numéro, Dazed and Confused, Tokion, Stiletto, and A magazine.

Oh man, this is good. If Jamie Lidell was born in any earlier era, he would have soul brother number one plastered all over his birth certificate.

With its countless abandoned buildings and neglected public space, Baltimore is the perfect city for wheat-paste artists. Gaia has set up shop here, and now pieces by Nanook have been popping up around town. Read more

Hailing from upstate New York, Phantogram were signed by the uber-hip Ghostly label on the recommendation of School of Seven Bells. Hardly surprising given Phantogram’s dark, beats-and-samples pop sound.

Here’s Jil, and Jack. I mean, Jackal. They were best friends. Jil loves Jackal, and Jackal? He is just an asshole. Jil always feeds jackal, but Jackal doesn’t care about Jil. He just thinks of Jil as his personal chef. Jil is kindhearted, but Jackal just loves to eat heart. Literally. [Free shipping in our online store] Read more
