Submachine Zero: Ancient Adventure
Submachine Zero: Ancient Adventure is a first-person puzzle game reminiscent of Myst. The object of the game is to open passages and doorways in an ancient tomb using assorted devices – broken statue pieces, mysterious jewels, Zippo lighters – that are hidden throughout the game. The creepy soundtrack and sound effects are surprisingly compelling for a Flash game. [play also the online game, Manifold]

Ourself Beside Me is the band formed by Yang Fan, formerly of all-girl garage punk band Hang On the Box. Beginning as a minimalist, jangly, indie-punk outfit several years ago, the Beijing-based trio has evolved into a more psychedelic, expansive, and experimental project. Its self-titled debut album (produced by P.K.14’s Yang Haisong) shows influences as wide-ranging as Syd Barrett, Can, Talking Heads, and spaced-out contemporary acts from the West — ducktails and Wet Hair come to mind. Yet another diamond in the rough of Beijing rock. Look for them next year at SXSW.

Murray Lightburn, frontman for Canadian indie group, The Dears, gave us the rundown for our sister site, My Secret Playlist, on the tunes that are currently on high rotation on his inner-ear iPod. He started with the Air song, Mike Mills [listen below]: ‘I’ve been working from my home studio and have a few tracks that I play in it because I am very familiar with how they sound. Mike Mills, aside from being a well-composed track, sounds really good. When the strings come in towards the end, I am wishing that I had written it’. Cool name, even cooler clothes. Apparently Karen Walker isn’t the only good thing about New Zealand’s fashion scene. There’s also Jason Gitmans (of Gitmans Knitwear) and Kylee Davis of The Stitch Ministry. Read more
Very few band reunions get me excited, but I’ve consistently loved Faith No More since I was 13. I loved their pre-Mike Patton era, I loved King for a Day, and I even loved their track with Boo Yah Tribe on the Judgment Night soundtrack. Kerrang recently hinted that a FNM reformation is in the works for ‘09, and though bassist Billy Gould has emphatically denied the rumors, the general consensus is that the reunion is on.
I don’t intend on tempting any grape cravings which some borderline AAs may be experiencing, but everyone deserves some red after a long day. Drop of the Day is an easy way to receive fantastic quality wine at an extremely competitive price. Sure there are places online that offer cheaper alternatives, but Drop of the Day offers quality wine that pleases your wallet and your taste buds, too. Better yet, there is a new drop available to choose from each day for around AU$9 per bottle. Hmmm, I recommend you go for the blends.
Sydney indie heroes (in the nicest possible way), The Paper Scissors (TPS to those that know the secret handshake) have made a video for their new single, The Bandit. And it’s good. Damn good.
Days Off is an incredibly catchy but smart punk band from Chicago. While they’re the best of what pop music through the ages has to offer, they’re by no means pop-punk. As infectious as their hooks and choruses are, there are enough off-kilter rhythms and complex guitar work to give their music a layered feel, putting them into a category all their own.

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.
