Atsushi Fukunaga
Atsushi Fukunaga’s understated approach to his installation pieces belies the obsession behind them. His work hides under radiators, behind columns, or in the patterns on manholes. But closer inspection reveals an almost manic attention to detai, breaking down and reconstructing the minutiae of public spaces and galleries like a taxidermist whose tools are kanji and Arabic numerals rather than glass eyes and armatures. When looking at the beautiful paintings of Mamma Anderson, I almost get the impression that the art world is being forced to look back upon itself. The body of her work seems to present itself like a textured snapshot of galleries, coffeshops and well-designed interiors. The rough, folksy execution of these paintings stands in pretty stark contrast to the particularly slick world she chooses to depict. Refreshing, to say the least. Read more

Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.
