Sun, surf, sand
Life:East is a wonderful new book of beachside shots taken by Sydney photographer, Chris Tan. We stirred the pot a little and asked him if all beaches are really just the same: ‘No way! My local beach — Bronte — is the best place in the world. It’s all about relaxing. No matter how bad you sleep or how bad your day was, you can always rely on the water and sand to make you feel better. Physical and visual aspects don’t necessarily outweigh each other — it’s more about how it makes you feel by being there’. What’s your favourite time of the day to take beach photos? ‘During the morning when like-minded people are out. It’s quiet and peaceful. The best light and things happen during the morning when everyone else is asleep’. Outside of Bronte, what’s another especially beautiful Sydney beach? ‘I always find myself going to Tamarama. It’s always great for people watching and for catching the great surfers. It’s got a nice cafe there, too’.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

I love the curated selection of abandoned swimming pool photos on Feature Shoot today, featuring work by Carlo Van de Roer and Albert Jodar, amongst others.
