Keith Tyson

I went recently to see Keith Tyson’s installation, Large Field Array, at the Pace Wildenstein gallery in Chelsea, New York. Each of the 230 sculptures within the larger work were mind-bendingly intricate – cubes that look like they were made of human flesh, hyper-realistic figures crammed into plexiglass boxes, miniature cities that appeared to have suffered a missile attack, a snarling satanic goathead bursting out from the wall. It was an assault on the senses and was everything but humble; clearly the work of an artist with vast resources. It would have been more satisfying had there been an interactive element. It didn’t help that gallery-goers had to wait outside to be allowed in – the sheer number of pieces made it impossible for more than a certain number of people to be in the room at the same time. That said, it was intense, intricate, and obsessive work that was impossible to ignore.

Iron Sky

Nazis, who have colonized the dark side of the moon since their defeat in WWII, have decided to re-invade Earth in the upcoming comedic action/sci-fi/steampunk-ish film Iron Sky. Laibach did the soundtrack. Who’s stoked? I’m stoked.

The Mystic Lady Tumblr is filled with a lot of, what seems to be, found images. Whether its her prolific collection of National Geographic scans, or even the images that she reblogs, she has impeccable taste and has created an amazing aesthetic.

The first album released by the Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, Dimanche a Bamako, bordered on exceptional, if not for its songwriting then for its sheer diversity. You’d be forgiven for approaching cautiously an album that draws its influences from Syria, Cuba, Egypt, India, and Colombia, as well as its own country – much like a restaurant that offers every cuisine on the planet: choose one and do it well, you’d argue. But the album is fantastic: so full of life, so catchy and so accessible. Read more
