Cluster and Eno
I’m in the midst of a Brian Eno period right now and I’ve just discovered the self-titled record Eno did with the new age kraut group, Cluster. You can put it on in the background, or if you’re really up for it, you can grab some headphones and bliss out in the forest to it by yourself. I think a lot of ambient music becomes redundant because it’s simply so easy to make and has become synonymous with shampoo ads and ‘chillout compilations’. But their collaboration has something more to it. I think it’s the vintage keyboards they use and the intense tremolo that occasionally pops up. His colourful, clean, folksy images have got me, though I must say that I’m not as drawn to some of his more overt examples of political subject matter as I am to his more personal, introverted images. Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.

The second album Eno & Cluster did together was better, it was called ‘After The Heat’. Eno even has one of his best songs tucked away on it.
