Twen magazine

The precursor to Nova, Willy Fleckhaus’ inspirational design for Twen from the 50s to the early 70s is simple and powerful, with groundbreaking use of photography and illustration. It really is a work of art direction genius.

Al Wertheimer

Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis — the recently re-published and re-edited version of the earlier publication, Elvis ‘56 — showcases Al Wertheimer’s remarkable portfolio of Elvis Presley images, shot over just a few days at a pivitol point in his career. Afforded access to one of the Twentieth Century’s biggest stars, Wetheimer’s candid images and fascinating first person written account makes us realize just how inferior, manipulated. and fake today’s celebrity images are by comparison.

This is a question with reference to Twen magazine –
I’m trying to track down people who contributed cartoons late 50’s to early 60’s, the person I had in mind drew very ‘gothic’ type illustrations.

If gold fronts are just a little too flashy for you, head over to Salt Lake City where Steve Heward at Heward Dental Lab will give you a ‘dental tattoo‘, which is actually a crown onto which he or another one of his artists can paint an image of your choice.

Ed Janssen is famed in Melbourne for his jewellery designs, sold through cult Morrissey-friendly label This Charming Man. ‘The Knuckle Sandwich’ charm necklace (two pieces of bread on either side of a tiny set of brass knuckles, as pictured above) exudes an oddly amusing menace. More recently ‘The Bear Trap’ has been dangling from every second neck, wiping out hope for Melbourne’s unsuspecting tiny forest animals. Janssen is about to launch a new range inspired by the iconography of various secret societies. Melburnians can check out their old and new favourites at the first This Charming Man exhibition launching this week at Alice Euphemia’s new store. Flex those tiny knuckles and watch those tiny feet. There is something almost apocalyptic about the intense black and white decimated, chaotic landscapes that French artist Didier Blondeau lovingly depicts.

Our celebrity-saturated culture makes many of us irrationally hateful of the faces we see on our TV screens and magazine pages. Good thing there’s Celebrity PunchOut to let off some of that steam.

Not much more needs to be said about this. Ricky Gervais, the funniest man in England, meets Larry David, the funniest man in America. Wit and genius collides. Very, very clever.

A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
