Big Dada
I love birthdays, even when they’re not my own. So I’m all for celebrating hip hop label Big Dada’s 10th birthday. Home to some of the coolest hip hop acts out there — such as Roots Manuva, Spank Rock, New Flesh and Bigg Jus — the British label was formed back in 1997 by Will Ashon and Peter Quicke on the premise that it would focus on ‘musical misfits and pioneers’. To coincide with their entry into double digits, the label has released a double CD compilation of its finest releases, as well as a documentary DVD that goes beyond the conventional interviews to include every promo video ever created during the label’s existence. Fine. very fine.

Everything about illustrator Bradford Haubrich’s work feels charmingly handmade. Even his website has a lovely sketched feel to it. My sense is that this is a guy who just loves to sketch and doodle and who can’t resist a single surface in his path because it’s just what he does.
After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. Lost At E Minor contributor Michelle Wilding captured the vibe of the night and Aussie nightlife with this video.
I’ve been living in Greenpoint Brooklyn for a couple of years now and one of the highlights is brunch on the weekends. After living in Crown Heights for seven years, where your only choices are Tom’s Diner or Popeye’s Fried Chicken, it’s an amazing change of pace. Brooklyn Label is a classic, old Brooklyn style restaurant with a great menu and when you’re a regular, you get seated before the masses. It’s definitely worth the trip to Greenpoint. But beware of the long waits at around 1pm when the hipsters wake up.
This sweet little project going on in Melbourne involves sleepovers. Cara Fox writes short stories about them and Douglas E Pope photographs them. The resulting collection will be exhibited later this year. Read more
I’ve yet to find out what they put in the water in Germany that generates such a consistently rich stream of good electronica. Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
