Beirut at The Delacorte Theater
I’ve never been a huge Beirut fan, but I’ve always appreciated their passion for Romanian funeral dirges. When I heard they were to play the Delacorte Theater in Central Park as part of the NY Gypsy Festival, the little ethnomusicologist in me convinced myself to go. The show turned out to be well worth waiting through the horrible, make-you-want-to-stab-your-eyes-out opening acts NY Gypsy All-Stars and the Balkan Beat Box. Frontman Zach Condon was wobbly drunk, but this kind of music is probably better played while intoxicated. The band was perfectly imperfect, out of tune but hitting the notes that really counted. Even the rowdy fratish hipsters couldn’t stay angry at the hippy kid who was so moved to groove out he couldn’t stay seated. There was no better show to be seeing on a warm night under a full moon.

I’m in love with interior decoration designer Jonathan Adler’s Druggist Pottery collection. It is so old school, but new school, yet edgy. They’re on sale at the moment, so I just purchased a white Anger Jar. I live in New York, so I tend to have a lot of … errr … emotion to store in there.
The Dutch, the beautiful Dutch, in terms of architecture anyway. Here they have led the way again with this reuse of an old crane dock. A new glass office building, with a climatic façade of double glazing, motorized louvers on the outside and full length windows on the inside, hovers above the old dock. Read more

Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally.
