Rack is a quarterly bilingual magazine, published in English and Chinese, and geared towards Asian influenced global youth culture. Rack brings communities of graffiti artists, skateboarders, fashion and graphic designers, and people from other urban sub-cultures together by sharing styles, philosophies and our own individual stories from around the world. Rack’s editor-in-chief is Richard Baimbridge has contributed to magazines such as Dazed, Time Out, Black Book, Elle, GQ, Wired, and Conde Nast Traveler. The launch issue included writers and photographers such as Greg Basdevant, former editor-in-chief of Colors magazine, and world-renowned photographer Klaus Thymann, as well as local Shanghai music DMC legend, Gary Wang, aka V-nutz.

A talent for mixed media and a good eye for detail has won London designer Andy Forshaw clients such as Dazed and Confused, Vice, and TimeOut. He’s just finished illustrating a mammoth book for Bloomsbury UK entitled What On Earth Happened which will be released worldwide this Autumn.
Anyone who reads The New Yorker will be familiar with the work of Brooklyn illustrator Jashar Awan, a consistant fixture within its pages. With strong influences clearly drawn from the worlds of superhero comics and modern art, Awan creates his own style of timeless, bold, richly narrrative illustration. Read more

Sydney-based artist Andy Uprock’s original process, known as ‘Cuprocking’, entails sticking thousands of plastic cups into wire fencing, creating large, temporary works of street art. The idea was born whilst travelling through South-East Asia and learning traditional Thai art and practices under the guidance of Puk Tattoo. Cuprocking is now taking over fences of the world as Andy, photographer Juan Moss and renowned artist Brett Chan set off to transform streets and public areas into floating walk-by galleries. The 40 day global tour kicks off on June 30 in Barcelona and then continues to Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Keen an eye on Andy’s website for updates. I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design. The young architect Junya Ishigami is pushing the boundaries of the weightless aesthetic stream of architecture. Here, for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology, he has designed a glass and steel pavilion with a roof that floats on a sparse forest of thin steel columns or ‘flats’. Read more
A new idea has emerged in Norway that we think could be the precursor to things to come in the way our societies interact and develop. The general gradual demise of traditional gathering places such as town halls, community centers and churches has seemingly gone in hand with a generational shift and sharp increase in online virtual communities. However, humans still need to rub shoulders at some point to get things done, until, say, we perfect the sensitive hologram. Read more
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and their mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes. The Shoe featured above is the Electric Light Shoe by Strawberry Frog.

Dead in the Now is a great new web comic by an artist named Rey about a boy who decides to raise an army of zombies. The style is anime inspired, but really loose and unfussy. There’s an almost frantic, psychedelic feel to it, which makes it unique. Not your typical fanboy fare.
Czech painter Victor Safonkin does some pretty impressive neo-classical/surrealist paintings that pay homage to all the masters while having a quirky style all their own. They are thankfully free of snarky pop-culture references and irony, which makes the images timeless and strikingly beautiful. Read more

Doug Kanter at Beijing’s Midi Music Festival
The Midi Music Festival is sorta like the SXSW of Beijing, where bands from all over the country gather each year to rock out. Beijing-based photojournalist Doug Kanter did a series of portraits of concert-goers at Midi last year that is pretty fun. Read more
French design dynamo Jean-Marie Massaud has created a Manned Cloud. A cruise airship with a hotel for 40 passengers and 15 staff, Massaud worked with the Office National d’Etudes et de Recherche Aérospatiale in this proposal. Read more
