The-affair [giveaway]

Just launched from East London, the-affair explores themes of the futility of religious intolerance and the Ministry of Love. More than just fashion, the-affair blends social commentary and design to create a statement that goes deeper than a typical tee. We’re also loving the interactive experience of the the-affair’s website, which gives a nice feel for the fit, fabric and prints. Take a look at the current collection – we’ve got one of each tee design to give away. To win, leave a comment saying why you think the label is called ‘the-affair’. Two random winners will be announced under this post on October 9.

Hipsters Have To Pee

We’ve noticed an overwhelming number of hipster kids being photographed in need of the bathroom. The usual traits are legs crossed, feet turned in, desperation in the eye and holding on tight. It looks like we’re not the only ones. Hipsters Have To Pee is a photo-blog documenting the hilarity. Read more

Skelator

I hadn’t heard of Skelator until the name was excitedly murmured amongst metal-heads in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I’m new in town, so was dutifully checking out the local metal scene, and the Galway Arms was rammed with leather and spikes. There was a decidedly medieval theme, and I spotted at least one real sword. Read more

Tights are not pants

I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.

they are named after the interracial love affair between their two male models which may actually be the designers behind the-affair? or mary magdelene and jesus which ever one is more plausible

Dale Hutton said | 27 September, 2007

It cause the designers’ grannies both had affairs with their milk men and because of the offspring’s bitterneess they designed outrageous clothing to spite the old people of the world. ha ha

L/V said | 27 September, 2007

Is it because scandal is a most profitable endeavor?

Or perhaps their love for textiles has perished, seeing as they have a few limited designs
and therefore considered only an affair?

I do have to say that the website is well done…

The interactive models [who may have been an item, as a previous post broke] are
a nice touch…

Belle said | 27 September, 2007

the label is called ‘affair’ because the designers are having an ‘affair’ with fashion – simple.
It’s their secret indulgence, it’s all they think about…

Renee said | 27 September, 2007

It refers to the lifelong love affair between the two rats on the Miniluv shirt. Poor rats, they are just as much the victims of Orwellian dystopia as Winston… On the shirt they are symbolically divided by the ministry building, but though they are forever apart in textile representation, their love lives on in spirit.

fundamentalist organizations do not sanction affairs, unless you are the head of said organization —power has its privileges.
affairs are all about what is going on behind a facade. affairs are chaotic energy that could change the course of events maybe even the course of history.
if you have ever watched 007 at work, then you know something about an affair – the affair. dangerous sexy covert political smug complex risky sophisticated – it makes sense when you look at these designs.

Elizabeth said | 27 September, 2007

Not that it is any of our affair but the Affair label was the idea of a fair young maiden whose affair at the local fair with a fair skinned man of good to fair religious conviction was seen as a way to make a fair day’s living!

Tom said | 27 September, 2007

Maybe it’s about the definition of the word…
af·fair \ə-ˈfer\ (noun) a matter occasioning public anxiety, controversy, or scandal

the affair is based on graham greene’s world war ii novel about a british novelist named maurice bendrix.

pacia said | 27 September, 2007

“the affair” is a representation of their concept behind the label. a vaguely specified concern. there’s a message, a matter, but it’s hidden or subtle.

jesus stares lovingly at the male model in the white t-shirt, fantasizing their next endeavour while The Man In The Rat T-Shirt gazes blankly into nowhere wondering where he went wrong with Jesus, what was said, what was done.
An affair of models, t-shirts and Jesus is what is meant by the brands name, abstract yet hard-hitting. The models cant see what the other see’s at the same time. A pity…I think so.
It could have worked so well.

Ray Lupton said | 1 October, 2007

I think that you called the label “The Affair” because when you were setting up the business your partners thought you were off having an affair because they saw so little of you.

Great brand by the way.

Isaun said | 2 October, 2007

“the affair” challenges the our perspective in a sense that we are all possibly living an affair of sorts with ourselves and that the world is a very contradictory place, not many prcactice what they preach, and are hipicritical, many have hidden agendas, and unknown affairs but we all seem to be doing the same, and in the end all aiming for similar goals just along a different path, all so that good and evil are subject to an individuals position of perspective.

wicked shirts site and concept btw, when r there gonna b more shirts?

“the-affair”
… the founders have been secretly plotting their plan to get out of their day jobs for ages, nabbing old friends for long afternoon coffees in dark pubs to get ideas and inspiration.. (and finally have decided to come clean, set up a sleek website and smartly onto the pages Lost at E Minor). BUT .now.. they wish to keep the mystery and passion that exists when you are doing something cheeky in the dark til 4am and then go to work for 9am with a spring in your step …. and besides… we all remember at least one really lusty love affair, so its happy memories all round.

Cam said | 7 October, 2007

Are they supposedly brothers?

Kristen said | 8 October, 2007

The meaning is all in the dash…

Anna said | 8 October, 2007

I would think ‘the-affair’ is a name inspired by the idea of subversion against the Ministry of Love, the organisation whose job is to enforce obedience to Big Brother in Orwell’s novel ‘1984′. The affair therefore becomes a term associated with political as well as adulterous scandal.

Brendon said | 9 October, 2007

Clearly it is thier hats. The affair is under the hat.

Well, it seems I’ve been in a vacuum of art since the spring. And now, its just a week or so out from the upcoming Young Blood exhibit, which features my paintings and opens at the Opera Gallery in New York. I find myself feeling both excited and nervous at the thought that this show is just around the corner. These past few months have seemed like one of the great feats of my lifetime. I have been working for five months on these two upcoming shows, immersed deeply in the studio, being on a complete mission to create what will be my debut show in Manhattan alongside a handful of other rising international artists. I would wake at once at 4:30 in the morning, to a strict regimen of coffee by five, and paint through the sunny summer days into late in the evening to complete these works. Read more

Last night, I caught Pagan Fest at B.B. Kings in NYC. I missed the band that I was the most excited to see, T˘r, but Turisas and Ensiferum more than made up for it. Americans have been pretty late to warm up to folk and Viking metal, and bands of this sort almost never tour the States, so it was gratifying to see that the show was sold out, and that the crowd was so exuberant. Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

Abstracted geometric forms, peculiar clockwork pieces, and a sense of childhood play; I can’t quite pinpoint why I love the jewellery designs of Sydney creative, Elke Kramer, but I do know that her jewellery is unique and off-beat, yet widely accessible and wearable. Read more

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
