David Shrigley
I first came across David Shrigley‘s funny and disturbing postcards a little while back. More recently I discovered a book of his that looked like a record full of lyrics for songs entitled The Empty Sleeve. Cool! He’s since asked musicians to make songs from these lyrics for a new project called Worried Noodles.

Nowadays it seems that the best viewing is on the internet, not TV. Though Vice magazine tends to be mostly fashion and trendsetting, Vice TV happens to be worldy and informative. It’s mostly comprised of documentaries but incorporates artists as presenters and programmers. [see also the Portable Film Festival]

Not to perpetuate any stereotypes or anything, but those owls sure do like to party. Hungover Owls features candid moments when those nocturnal birds could use a little hair of the dog.
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place. Where would we be without synths and drum machines? Probably still listening to Grateful Dead jams in the alleyways of Height-Asbury. Done well, the remix is a wonderful thing. Case in point is Royksopp’s rendering of the Kings of Convenience track I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From. And then there’s Riton’s version of the Mystery Jets song, The Boy Who Ran Away. A White Lines for the 21st Century? I think so.

Sao Paulo designer Andreia Chaves created these extraordinary ‘invisible shoes‘, which are made from a ‘faceted mirrored surface allowing the shoe to reflect different angles of the environment around it thus camouflaging itself with its surroundings’. Read more
