I was recently visiting my friend Michel Lagarde, an illustration agent and publisher in Paris, and besides falling in love with his amazing collection of drawings by artists like Sempé, Georges Lepape, and Ronald Searle, I fell for the small collection of comic books he has just published. The cover design is modern-retro using vibrant colors, the size is small enough to carry them around, and the black and white drawings by eight different artists are funny and beautiful.

‘The comic book stylings of an illustrative genius’, is just one of the ways you might describe the work of Jason Goad. And you can’t help but like someone whose website address is ‘ingoadwetrust’. Goad makes use of colour in the same way that Ninja’s don’t, resulting in an welcome assault on the eyeballs. Apparently his imagination is ‘fuelled by warm root beer and egg salad sandwiches’, so may we suggest admiring this amazing artwork at a safe distance.
Dead in the Now is a great new web comic by an artist named Rey about a boy who decides to raise an army of zombies. The style is anime inspired, but really loose and unfussy. There’s an almost frantic, psychedelic feel to it, which makes it unique. Not your typical fanboy fare.

SugarBoukas Comics just posted this devastating short comic about two Simpsons-obsessed brothers. This is guaranteed to simultaneously make and ruin your day.

This café, cookie shop, ice cream place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn is all about flavor, aroma and family. Their cookies and ice cream are absolutely to-die-for, and the place is so well-designed, painted in vintage colors with old family pictures printed on the walls, that you’ll want to indulge yourself for more than just a few minutes. Try their Whoopies and Lucia cookies. They’re my favourite.
I’m a big fan of toys, not all toys, but cute, adult-adaptable toys. The Germusu pouch is a good example of that: it’s small enough to sit in my pocket, large enough to keep all my change, and funky enough to make me look cool. Created by artist V.Germy, Germusu are pouches with a twist. Each zipper-mouthed germ has an awesome personality.
Good Wood: The Art of Skateboards
Andrew Davis (from AWWSWEET, a curating agency) has done it again: his second skateboard art show has made it all the way from Detroit to the Brooklyn-based art space, Third Ward. Inspired by the documentary feature film Beautiful Losers, which focuses on the subcultures of skateboarding and graffiti, Good Wood brings together 45 different artists who’ve designed a stunning selection of decks. Styles range from collage, graffiti, acrylic, oil, ink, silkscreen and photography to sculpture. Some of the big players in the show include Chuck Anderson, Nathan Fox, Leo Espinosa, and myself, amongst many others.

Aurel Schmidt’s intricate drawings make me want to start a band just so I can use it as album art. The DIY-outsider tack many artists have taken of late has produced some art that makes you think ‘I could do that’, but Schmidt’s work is inimitable — her rendering of hair must make other artists furious with envy. Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
Michael Wolf, a German born American photographer, has lived in Hong Kong since 1995. His work explores the ways city-dwellers in China and Hong Kong shape their surroundings in an ‘organic metropolis’. His series — Architecture of Density — has some breathtaking images of Hong Kong’s apartment buildings.
In Japan, when one makes squeezing gestures with both hands at chest level, one is gesturing that one wants candy — soft, round, bouncy candy. At least, that’s what this commercial would have us believe.

Well, today has been a great day and New Dandyism, the lovechild of a conglomate of lusty designers — Sons by Obedient Sons, wood wood and Call of the Wild — is the reason. A master of juxtaposition, Canadian photographer Liz Wolfe has updated her site with her newest series which focuses on characters and confection. The photos are never what they first seem, revealing something a little more macabre on closer inspection: a meat tree, a diseased dear, a melting icy pole dripping blood. It’s all presented in hyper-real candy colours.
