I was recently visiting my friend Michel Lagarde, an illustration agent and publisher in Paris, and besides falling in love with his amazing collection of drawings by artists like Sempé, Georges Lepape, and Ronald Searle, I fell for the small collection of comic books he has just published. The cover design is modern-retro using vibrant colors, the size is small enough to carry them around, and the black and white drawings by eight different artists are funny and beautiful.

Comic book artist Rafael Grampa’s style reminds me of Taiyo Motsumoto’s but with an art-nouveau and even tattoo-inspired sense of layout informing each panel. His unique renderings of classic comic book characters has certainly rekindled my interest in superheroes. Fernanda Cohen solo show in Argentina

I also just finished a set of window displays for high-end, Argentine fashion designer, Martin Churba, which opened last week. I love the detail and the sense of escapism in Ray Caesar’s digitally rendered artworks. His work reminds me a little of Mark Ryden’s, without the slabs of meat and the lofty price tags.

They’re both graduates of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in Industrial Design and Sculpture respectively, and have been long time collaborators both musically and visually. Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
It’s only fitting a band of Canadian rootsters like this would tap a mythical figure of folklore for their namesake. Indeed, Ottawa’s The John Henrys understand the power of the familiar. Read more
