What the Heck Fest

The What the Heck Fest is an arts and music festival that I just played at in Anacortes, Washington. It’s a great mini-festival featuring artists and musicians largely from the DIY indie scene in the Pacific Northwest. It’s all-ages, relaxed, quirky, and lots of fun. I went into this taxidermy store today in the Mission, San Francisco. There’s something appealing about dead stuffed animals trying to look cute.

There’s a world-weariness about Two Gallants frontman Adam Stephens. It reveals itself in the Tom Waits-like raspiness that permeates his gin house drawl and in the talkin’ blues narratives that he weaves around his simple acoustic fingerpicking. They are the new superstars of the West Coast scene, majestic showmen in homespun rags.

Listen to the Two Gallants track, The hand that held you down.

With her collection of Skinover gloves, Rotterdam-based artist and sculptor Silvia B has taken a somewhat natural approach to the task of keeping hands warm — warts and all.

A little infectious lollipop rock anyone? Feel free to embarrass yourself singing along at the stoplight. If the other drivers give you that look, roll down the windows and spread the love.
