Juana Molina

Juana Molina’s Segundo is one of my favorite albums. Molina is from Argentina and has an incredibly unique approach to music. I love her sense of rhythm. Hopefully we’ll tour together in the Spring of 2008. [see also Freshcore]

What the Heck Fest

The What the Heck Fest is an arts and music festival that I just played at in Anacortes, Washington. It’s a great mini-festival featuring artists and musicians largely from the DIY indie scene in the Pacific Northwest. It’s all-ages, relaxed, quirky, and lots of fun. No wonder I’ve played there six times now. [see also This Is Wanted]

Canadian illustrator Courtney Wotherspoon layers delicate image upon image to create the most captivating, colourful kaleidoscopes, an effect only enahanced by her trademark multimedia, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink execution. The result of this approach is particularly refreshing. We can rest assured that something wholly new and exciting will emerge from Wotherspoon’s studio each and every delectable time. Read more

With the streets of New York already covered in a thin layer of ice after a heavy snowstorm yesterday, it’s interesting to see how other cold winter cities deal with this ubiquitous companion. At the annual Ice and Snow Festival, in Haban, China, they get kinda creative with it: building an entire city out of ice and then lighting it up like an extra frosty, colourful Christmas tree. Back in the day, New Zealand pop absurdists, Split Enz were the finest damn Australasian band around. This track, I Walk Away, off their final album — Spellbound — is their ultimate moment: a hefty dose of pure melodic majestry, wrapped around the aching lyrics and quirky arrangements of genius frontman, Neil Finn.

If Pharrell’s calling these guys ‘geniuses’, you’d better watch out! Chester French are Ivy League prep boys from Massachusetts who have mastered an interesting Beatlesque sound tinged with Motown influences. When, in May 2007, the duo — D.A. and Max — completed their recording and their degrees (in African American Studies and Social Anthropology respectively), they were snapped up by Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak.

Car from made ice

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.
