Catalina Estrada

A few weeks back we ran some of Columbian illustrator Catalina Estrada’s work for Paul Smith in Japan. So we checked in with her to see how it all came about: How did the assignment for Paul Smith come up and what was the brief? ‘They contacted me by email. I think they saw my work in a book publication. They wanted me to create a few illustrations based on the theme Animals in a London Park for their Autumn/Winter Pink collection in Japan’. Your work is always so vibrant. Does this reflect your own personality? ‘Yes, sometimes it does’. You seem to have a thing for birds! Is this a lifelong interest, and what is it about their shape that so intrigues you? ‘My father has always loved birds. He has a special corner in his garden where he puts food for them — water with brown sugar and very ripe plantains — and they all come there. He spends lots of time watching them and taking care of them. I think I inherited that love for birds from him’. Is there one context your illustrations haven’t yet been featured in that you would love to see? ‘I want to see my illustrations on ceramics, dishes, plates, on lamps, objects, interior designs. I want to do many, many things with my illustrations. I just need to find more time to do all that’.

Vibrant, colourful photos of New York in 1971

We love the voyeuristic thrill of these photos by Gentle Giant that ran on the Retronaut website and reveal a vibrant, thriving, bustling New York in 1971 that looks vaguely similar to the New York that I experienced between 2006 and 2011. Minus the beehive hairdoes, flares, and the big red phone booths, of course. Read more

New Banksy artwork critiques London Olympics, perhaps

That elusive street art urchin (and we mean that in the nicest possible way), Banksy, has struck again in London, with a new artwork mysteriously appearing on the wall of a shop on Whymark Avenue, Turnpike Lane. As is to be expected, the street art sends a subtle social message, though so subtle in this case that Banksy-philes are torn over whether it is criticising the upcoming Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or last summer’s riots. Instagram Socialmatic Camera

It had to happen sooner or later. Italian-based ADR Studio have created a prototype for the world’s first Instagram photo camera, armed with a duffle bag worth of features, including 16 GB mass storage; Wifi and Bluetooth; an Internal printer to make your Instagram photos real; and paper cartridge with Instagram Paper Sheets. Genius! Well, at least, we think so. They’re currently looking for Indiegogo funding to make it all happen on a far bigger scale. Read more

Concept art is like tattoos and comics for me. When it’s bad, I cannot imagine that there are any good pieces anywhere on earth. But this goes the other way, too, and when it’s good, it’s sublime. Read more

I came across Nigel Cox’s work at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. I was blown away by his remarkable, detailed figures and his minimal compositions. His paintings are subtly powerful and filled with optimism and confidence. Cox is based in London, UK and works in his studio near Camberwell. Read more
