The Lovers
One of my favorite bands, beside biggies like Belle & Sebastian, Languis, and The Smiths, is this French band I discovered recently called, The Lovers. If you’re in one of those hectic moods and you just feel like dancing until you collapse, play The Lovers — loudly — and you’ll get there. They’re about as poppy and bubbly as it gets. I used to love the cartoon M.A.S.K, but I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this Lego replica of Rhino, the truck that the leader of M.A.S.K, Matt Trakker, drives. Alex Schranz, aka Orion Pax, deserves a pat on the back.

The nice thing about black metal is that it’s so hard for it to be co-opted. Between its often extreme ideologies and its inherently abrasive sound, it’s hard to imagine anyone trying to sell you a pair of sneakers with it. Even as some bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have wormed their way into the mainstream, the vast majority of black metal fans and bands out there are happy to stay in the filthy pits of the underground. While I feel I am not alone in breathing a sigh of relief over this season’s purging of fluoro, in retrospect there was a lot to be learned from the experience: don’t wear all fluoro, or don’t wear fluoro at all. And we slowly trudged back to black, which, despite what other colors may think, will always be the new black. Read more
