When it comes to illustration, there’s a certain freshness in good children’s picture books that I don’t seem to find anywhere else. It’s as if it were a playground instead of a canvas or a mere book page. Two of my favorite children’s book illustrators are Tomi Ungerer and the Italian artist, Emanuele Luzzati [above], who I discovered recently in Rome, but have never seen here in the States, even though he’s been around forever.
