New York artist Anton Van Dalen will be having an exhibition at Adam Baumgold Gallery, in New York City, with an opening reception on September 6th. The exhibition will include sketchbooks, in addition to more traditionally “finished” works. As an artist and educator, Anton has left an indelible impression upon many young artists, illustrators, and graphic designers (myself included). Van Dalen curated a wonderful Saul Steinberg exhibition at The School of Visual Arts a few years ago (Anton worked for many years as Steinberg’s assistance), and I’m excited to have an opportunity to finally see a collection of his own work in person.

Union Hall, a band room with a bocce twist
One of my favourite venues in New York is Brooklyn’s Union Hall, right around the corner from Tamari, a super sushi joint. Upstairs they have two massive fireplaces burning and a bocce ball court. Yup, bocce. Downstairs you feel like you’ve walked into the museum of natural history where you can see live bands on a stage reminiscent of grandma’s living room.
Located on Manhattan’s Crosby Street, the Housing Works cafe is a great place to browse around a huge collection of used and new books. The Used Book Cafe is not only that — they also have live music, readings and book signings. And even better is that one hundred percent of their profits go to Housing Works, a non-profit that helps the homeless.

David Lynch’s most recent theatrical release, Inland Empire, has finally been made available on DVD. A cinematic fever dream, this film is one of his least linear creations, comprised of a collection of seemingly disjointed scenes that, when woven together, tell an incredibly moving and profoundly disturbing story. Built upon an armature of themes common throughout his body of work — prostitution, violence, sex, jealousy, and infidelity — Lynch has crafted his most artful and manipulative film to date, guiding viewers through a vaguely familiar landscape of unspeakable horror. Drawn by Frank Santoro and written by Ben Jones, Cold Heat is a semi-monthly tale of sex, drugs, and murder. Fans of Paper Rad, or anything Dan Nadel has been involved with, will love it. Whenever I read it, I can’t help but feel that I’ve been allowed entry into some private universe. The Comics Journal sums it up better than I possibly could: ‘A comic that feels like a cable from a world where the only thing that exists is a dimly lit bedroom in which you’re wearing ripped jeans and you just keep listening to and rewinding Teenage Riot over and over again. Outstanding’.

Dalton Trumbo was the first blacklisted writer to win an Academy Award. However, he could not claim the award until years later because he had been forced to write under a pseudonym. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten and even spent a year in jail as a result of investigations into Communist influences in the motion picture industry. This documentary is fascinating not just for its examination of a bizarre period in American history where fear replaced reason and innocent men were jailed, but also for how Trumbo dealt with these hardships. Herzog and de Meuron, the Swiss architects, have led the way with this re-use of the existing building fabric of CaixaForum in Madrid. Rather than being slavish to the existing openings, the building has been cut away for a contemporary practicality. We think this is an example of heritage not getting in the way of progress. Check out a similar concept of a previous post re-using the city fabric, where we were dreaming of such thing.
Alison Malone on her Daughters of Job photos
A couple of weeks back we featured the work of New York-based photographer Alison Malone, who went into the secretive environment of the Job’s Daughters to photograph the girls who are direct blood relatives of the Master Masons. This is the second part of that interview. The portraits of girls [below] are angelic. What was your intention of photographing them in this light? ‘There are many reasons that I chose to photograph the girls in this way. The first is the simple love I have of the straight photographic portrait and its ability to transmit the subtle nuances that come from an individual. When a portrait is made there is an opportunity for a delicate exchange between the photographer and the subject that creates a place to examine how one holds oneself in a moment’. Read more
Kikkerland, the company behind those campfire tea light holders, has a line of amazing snap-together anatomic models of beetles, frogs, moths, cows, humans, and a wide range of other animals, even a wooly mammoth. Where the hell were these when I was a kid?
This is Mike Bertino and his work absolutely wonderful. He’s got this original, almost lo-fi Tim Biskup thing going on and it makes me really want to grab a beer with him. I love when artists give their pieces names like Knuckle Inferno and Man Beard. It just makes them that much better. He keeps a blog where he publishes his latest work and lets you know where they’re available for purchase, so go check it out. I think I’m going to ask him to be my BFF. Well, at least one of them.
