Anton Van Dalen
New York artist Anton Van Dalen will be having an exhibition at Adam Baumgold Gallery, in New York City, with an opening reception on September 6th. The exhibition will include sketchbooks, in addition to more traditionally “finished” works. As an artist and educator, Anton has left an indelible impression upon many young artists, illustrators, and graphic designers (myself included). Van Dalen curated a wonderful Saul Steinberg exhibition at The School of Visual Arts a few years ago (Anton worked for many years as Steinberg’s assistance), and I’m excited to have an opportunity to finally see a collection of his own work in person.

Drawn by Frank Santoro and written by Ben Jones, Cold Heat is a semi-monthly tale of sex, drugs, and murder. Fans of Paper Rad, or anything Dan Nadel has been involved with, will love it. Whenever I read it, I can’t help but feel that I’ve been allowed entry into some private universe. The Comics Journal sums it up better than I possibly could: ‘A comic that feels like a cable from a world where the only thing that exists is a dimly lit bedroom in which you’re wearing ripped jeans and you just keep listening to and rewinding Teenage Riot over and over again. Outstanding’.

I stumbled upon this cool street style blog that shows original and edgy people on the streets of Helsinki. Punk, Goth, Harajuku, Pin-up or retro, the people featured here have a unique sense of style. Many of the clothes are modified or created by the owners to fit their personalities and each photo has its own description written by the person in the picture.
Metronomy are a cool little London-based group headed by producer and remix extraordinaire, Joseph Mount. The sound sits somewhere between Autechre and Vitalic: clanging keyboards and body-gurning beats laced with an undercurrent of ominous electronica. It’s not as inaccessible as much of the more twisted electro-based stuff out there at the moment, although it retains an edge perhaps unpalatable for some ears. Yet there’s a catchiness to it that is clearly roping in the crowds: their live shows are a spectacle, complete with synchronised dancing and flashing costumes. If that floats your boat, they’re playing for free at the Tate Britain, London, on 27 September.
