Anton Van Dalen
New York artist Anton Van Dalen will be having an exhibition at Adam Baumgold Gallery, in New York City, with an opening reception on September 6th. The exhibition will include sketchbooks, in addition to more traditionally “finished” works. As an artist and educator, Anton has left an indelible impression upon many young artists, illustrators, and graphic designers (myself included). Van Dalen curated a wonderful Saul Steinberg exhibition at The School of Visual Arts a few years ago (Anton worked for many years as Steinberg’s assistance), and I’m excited to have an opportunity to finally see a collection of his own work in person.

Random collaborations always come as a pleasant surprise. This time New York-based graffiti artist KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) has joined forces with lavish beauty product manufacturer, Kiehl’s, in a bid to raise money for non-profit art initiative RxArt. KAWS’ design adorns an exclusive line of Kiehl’s skin moisturizers, with all proceeds benefiting RxArt’s mission to install art pieces in US hospitals.
Cook. Eat. Drink. Live in New York City
Hmmm, hmmm. I’m heading along to Cook Eat Drink Live in New York this weekend to indulge in a three-day modern food and wine event at The Tunnel and La Venue, at which there will be a sampling of ‘ultra-premium gourmet foods and spirits, plus appearances from some of the city’s premier chefs’. It’s going to be an event of gastronomical indulgence, so I’ll be fasting for at least, errr, three hours in anticipation.

David Lynch’s most recent theatrical release, Inland Empire, has finally been made available on DVD. A cinematic fever dream, this film is one of his least linear creations, comprised of a collection of seemingly disjointed scenes that, when woven together, tell an incredibly moving and profoundly disturbing story. Built upon an armature of themes common throughout his body of work — prostitution, violence, sex, jealousy, and infidelity — Lynch has crafted his most artful and manipulative film to date, guiding viewers through a vaguely familiar landscape of unspeakable horror. Drawn by Frank Santoro and written by Ben Jones, Cold Heat is a semi-monthly tale of sex, drugs, and murder. Fans of Paper Rad, or anything Dan Nadel has been involved with, will love it. Whenever I read it, I can’t help but feel that I’ve been allowed entry into some private universe. The Comics Journal sums it up better than I possibly could: ‘A comic that feels like a cable from a world where the only thing that exists is a dimly lit bedroom in which you’re wearing ripped jeans and you just keep listening to and rewinding Teenage Riot over and over again. Outstanding’.
