Zanerobe [giveaway]

We’ve been longtime fans of Aussie streetwear label ZANEROBE. The guys have just released their Summer World Series collection — which they describe as ‘Evel Knievel meets Eddie the Eagle’. Whatever it’s called, it’s good timing with summer banging on the door. They had some gear floating around and have chucked our way a male and female summer clothing pack. To go into the draw, all you have to do is leave a comment under this post saying what you plan to do this summer (or winter for those in the north).

Double vote-count if you forward this post onto a mate or two. Winner announced 25 September under this post.

ACO’s Great Romantics tour

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Launching Newcastle’s The Clinic

I moved to Newcastle late last year, though I still do a lot of work in Sydney. What a great city Newcastle is. It’s been breath of fresh air for me. For the first few months, I worked on Lost At E Minor and our online pubishing company, Conversant Media, from home. But then I heard about the Renew Newcastle project, launched by one of Australia’s creative stars (in terms of making things happen, not talking the talk), Marcus Westbury. Read more

Kobe Beefcake puts the meat back into fashion

I received a Kobe Beefcake t-shirt today and I’m already in meat-lover’s heaven. Who’d have thought all those funky shapes are actually cuts of meat? This new label from Kobe Japan is an insider’s (and meat-lover’s) treasure.

So, this summer i am going to walk around downtown/boardwalks/and beaches and take in all the local flavor, hopefully the flavor of independent music.

Summer….wow….it’s still winter down here in Tassie, despite what the calendar says…snow on the mountain above the city today! So I plan to wait until January and then put a t-shirt on! :)

Vega said | 4 September, 2007

I will be having winter in summer — travelling across the USA (complete with skiing!) and enjoying northern hemisphere weather in general. I’m looking forward to escaping sweltering summer heat… maybe I’ll change my tune after I’ve had a second winter this year. ;)
In other summer plans: a wedding to attend, job and digs to find, and a new year of new fun and challenges and life to begin living!

Rodger said | 4 September, 2007

This summer i am going to figure out exactly what i am going to do in life. I’ve been a graphic designer for the past 5 years, but i think there’s more to life. My new career may possibly be “full time surf bum” - this summer i will learn to surf, i can’t wait.

Every summer I relocate my design studio’s office, which is based on my partner’s farm (halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne) to the sunny locale of Beachport, South Australia! Generally I try and make myself work until 3pm and then take my laptop upstairs between the hours of 3 and 4pm to work on the balcony in the sunshine and then knock off at 4pm with a few sauv blancs - all for good measure! Weekends are spent 30 metres away from the house on the beach with my dog Bully! Summer time for me is all about taking in the lifestyle and finding a good balance!

Gina said | 4 September, 2007

This summer I am going to start exercising and get tonned right up so i can strut around in those tiny green shorts!

Peter said | 4 September, 2007

This summer I will be embarking on a journey of self discovery in order to better understand myself, my purpose, and my place within the universe.

That’s what I intend to do. Realistically though, I’ll spend the whole 3 months maintaining my Facebook page.

oh my gash i will throw away all my clothing and chersih such threads dearly for the rest of my life…If i was to win them!!! ZANEROB is a dream come true to a thriftstore loving hospice raider such as myself…plus I live in South Africa where such clothing does not exist!!! This is surely my destiny!!!! So for this Summer im gonna get out of the academic vibe and go rural with some hard work on our family dairy farm and then off to Zimbabwe and Mozambique to work at a few orphanages and hopefully get some beach time in those awesome shotrts!!

In South Dakota, we are just heading into fall. I’m loving the cool nights and the changing scent of the outdoors. I’m planing on doing some serious sledding this winter :)

Peg said | 5 September, 2007

I’ll be soaking up the sun, surfing, reading the paper and some good books and downing a few glasses vino with friends and family… and with any luck I’ll be doing all of htis and more in some cool zanerobe gear!

I will be trying to make this baboon’s hand that I got surgically implanted after (another) ice infused blackout, look cool with some gnarly threads !

pacia said | 6 September, 2007

i’ll be either snowboarding or dancing in the rain depending on which coast i plan to spend my Winter up North. If i’m lucky, maybe i’ll get bits of snowboarding/skiing in there on a budget, if not, then i’ll be shovelling snow and sprinkling salt on driveways. Family, friends, food and wine…a definite state of relaxation. Gift-shopping? (unlikely) …
so you see..to keep me in good summery cheer….during dismal wintry days…this lil summer package would be a swell addition to life :P

I’m going to head back to australia, find me a pair of tight fitting short shorts and strut and the beach saying ‘crikey, i’m baking!’

KateB said | 6 September, 2007

I plan to do as I always do., surfing, and everything else that involves hanging out at the beach x

TEZ said | 6 September, 2007

I’ll be mowing that bloody lawn a hell of a lot more than i did during winter (and perspiring a hell of a lot more too). On the bright side of things though, the dog turds tend to dry out and turn that crumbly-powdery white much more rapidly during the summer months….. thus being much more easier on the old snoz when that victa blade goes to work!

naomi said | 6 September, 2007

summer’s all about wearing cotton dresses and hang out wit yo friends in the sunshine, having picnics and eating ice-cream, drinking milkshakes and having waterfights and chasing the boyz around the park and pinning them down to paint their nails fluoro pink.
yeah.

Roni said | 6 September, 2007

Everick said | 6 September, 2007

As it’ll be my 25th in the new year, i’m planning to get together an elite group of friends and family and hit the slopes somewhere in europe and dedicate myself to switching from skis to snowboarding having been introduced to it on the last day a couple of years ago! should be epic! :)

Heading into the fall here in Nova Scotia, Canada. I am getting ready for a long winter giving me plenty of time to work on a new series of paintings and work on my 1971 BSA restoration project! I am usually not so excited for the cold winter months…

I can’t wait for summer! I can come out of hibernation. I’m going to fix my poor surfboard and go surfing. My favourite spot here in Sydney is Nth Narrabeen. But I might also go and visit my Gran in New Zealand. She lives in a tiny town on the west coast of the North Island, its called “Waitara” which is Maori for River mouth. The town sits where the river that runs down from the nearby mountain meets the sea. Its a rugged and beautiful place, and because of the river mouth, it has an amzing permanant surf break. Scary though… only the tough local moari boys ride it, with helmets for the rocks underneath! Maybe I’ll give it a go though… I can’t wait for summer!!

Alex said | 8 September, 2007

sunburn, frosty fruits and sand caked toes here we come :)

Busting for summer to kick in. Time to hang with good mates, make new ones at the festivals, soak up the Sydney vibe of late balmy nights on the balcony or falling out of nightclubs & spend as much time at the beach as possible. What a rockin’ country we live in!
Bring It On!

The whole point of summer (or so I’ve heard) is to do away with the planning and just have fun! So I will be: relaxing, drinking excessively, going to as many gigs as possible, and following some roads less travelled.

Mike said | 10 September, 2007

this summer i will be mostly wearing yoghurt.

I am planning to lay around on the beach, looking pretty. And when I have time left over from doing that, I will be lurking around on children’s playground.

No no, I just changed my mind. I’ll be doing the usual thing, working, partying, camping and BBQing.

I love the guys from Zanerobe. Jono - you are a star and love what you have done with the lable. I am planning to spend this summer having a winter. I have just moved to Hong Kong and plan to spend the time exploring the surrounding islands, eating the great food and partaking in the national passtime - shopping. As we are off to Vancouver for Christmas, I think we will have a few days tearing it up at Whistler.

The song Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode is just about the most dark, beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. There’s something very compelling about it all: it’s gloomy and depressing during the verses, but then this sexy, almost hypnotically melodic chorus bursts in out of nowhere. The song came out in 1984 and is reputedly based on a true story, with singer Dave Gahan concluding at the end of it all: ‘I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours but I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour, and when I die, I expect to find Him laughing’. Brilliant.

Very few band reunions get me excited, but I’ve consistently loved Faith No More since I was 13. I loved their pre-Mike Patton era, I loved King for a Day, and I even loved their track with Boo Yah Tribe on the Judgment Night soundtrack. Kerrang recently hinted that a FNM reformation is in the works for ‘09, and though bassist Billy Gould has emphatically denied the rumors, the general consensus is that the reunion is on.

I don’t know if it’s the name, the relaxed look, or the attitude that just don’t sit too well with authority, but something about New York based label Sophomore has got us reminiscing about the good old days. Their current collection has boys and girls getting back-to-basics. Think jersey sweats and loose tees, mixed with yoke necks, caplet sleeves and tapered waists. And you know what that means? The search for the perfect white tee and the ultimate summer singlet is over. If that’s not enough to get you inspired, pull out your denim, pop on some 1970s vintage Jodie Foster, and get ready to channel some Lower East Side cred.

The WorldToilet blog

When I was living in China, a friend of mine had an idea to publish a guidebook about the country’s bathrooms because many expats spend the first few months living abroad going through unfortunate, awkward, and nightmarish experiences coping with sanitation issues, squat toilets, and curious locals trying to catch a glimpse of Western junk. WorldToilet.info is a hilarious but very useful resource for travelers wondering what to expect and how to behave in various exotic locals when nature calls.
