Park8 Hotel, Sydney

Around the corner is Sydney’s busiest shopping strip, the Pitt Street Mall. And across the road is the iconic Hyde Park. Surry Hills, Kings Cross and Darling Harbour are not far from the Park8. Included among them are Angus Andrews, from The Liars, Ben Lee (who wrote about his festish for vintage Rolexes, amongst other things), Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene, designer Deanne Cheuk, artist Sam Weber, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs (who brought Juana Molina to our attention), and Tegan from Tegan and Sara.

Beijing-based band Hanggai write original songs in the traditional folk styles of their Mongolian ancestors — throat-singing, horsehair fiddles, lutes — spearheading an Asian version of the old-time revival. This stuff makes every flavor of the month indie band seem vapid and meaningless.

Ok, so superlatives aren’t really my thing but, damn … the Meet Lincoln t-shirt from emerging fashion label, Klaus Industries, is the coolest tee I’ve seen all year. Who would have thought that America’s finest would make such a striking print graphic. Read more
