365 Happy Days
Illustrator and designer James P Gilmour is in the midst of a project called 365 Happy Days where he makes a digital drawing or painting each day and uploads them on Friday of every week. Of the project he says: ‘Years ago I put 20 cents into one of those bubble gum novelty machines and out came a small plastic badge in the shape of a heart with ’365 Happy Days’ on it. As with most bubble gum novelty badges, it wasn’t long before the pin fell off and the heart was lost. I still remember it though and thought about it at an art opening last month. I left the opening with the feeling that something was wrong and this project was born’. [see also Hidden Lives]

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church
Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

I came across Nigel Cox’s work at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. I was blown away by his remarkable, detailed figures and his minimal compositions. His paintings are subtly powerful and filled with optimism and confidence. Cox is based in London, UK and works in his studio near Camberwell. Read more

Pickle Hut was designed by architect Dan Hoffman and The Cranbrook Architectural Office. It is a place where the children of Brookside School can play, recite stories and dream. Set up for children to enter into this mysterious U-Shape building, the Pickle Hut offers up a little hub of sanctuary in order to let their imaginations fly. If only I had such a magical edifice to call my own and run to when head nun, Sister Mary, was on one of her many Catholic tirades. Eek! [photo by Paul Hitz]
Grace is part of a new series of books by author Dale Cusack. The story chronicles the lives of Grace and her feline companion Boot in their struggle to fight the evil Drawl and the cover illustration was done by Auckland-based artist, and Lost At E Minor contributor, Dennis Juan Ma. We asked him about what shaped the colour choices for the piece: ‘I wanted to create a mystery world within the reality. I wanted the colour to encourage readers to stimulate their imagination. I illustrated the covers with a classical Japanese wood block look to show the oriental flavour of the cat’s world. And it just happens that I’m a wood block art fan’. Read more
