The Cooper-Hewitt Museum’s Design for the Other 90% exhibition is running in New York until late September. The exhibit features growing trends amongst designers to create affordable and socially responsible objects for the vast majority of the world’s population that is not traditionally serviced by professional designers. The show is held outside in the garden area of a beautiful old mansion.

Dear Japan art event in New York
Come out to a gallery in Soho, New York, on Saturday afternoon and purchase art for your home for a good cause. The one evening event Dear Japan has been organized by a group of Japanese artists who live in New York. It features 170 illustrators and fine artists, and all the works are $200 or under. It’s a small portion of what most of the participating artists would normally sell their work for. Of course, I am donating for this good cause, too. Read more
BLOW UP: featuring Hanuka, Shimizu, Weber
Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds — Sam Weber (Canada), Yuko Shimizu (Japan), and Tomer Hanuka (Israel) — are meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American aesthetic to examine their new-found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities. Each of the illustrators featured as part of BLOW UP (running at New York’s Society of Illustrators until October 16) created new works to be shown for the first time in this exhibition. Read more

It might appear that Laurent Le Deunff constructed these fleshy, zombie-looking animal sculptures from dirt and deceased beast remains. Fortunately, the French-artist actually made use of Kraft paper, chicken wire, dreadlocks and other varied components. Don’t ask me why, but the series reminds me of elephant dung heels. Read more
Don’t you know this ritual, too? Monday morning, coffee to go, picking up your newspaper of choice, curious to see what’s the top news today. This is the kind of cover that makes me spit out my coffee giggling.
Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.
D’espresso is a coffee shop located on New York’s Lower East Side. The walls are covered in tiles with pictures of books on them, giving the illusion that the space is tilted. Designed by Nema Workshop..
Cat-haters, or those simply too jaded by a lifetime of LOLcats, will get a kick out of this site, which wryly refuses to be wowed by any degree of feline adorability. But then, cat worshippers like myself will also enjoy the site, as it is still full of cats n’ kittens. Read more
There’s some nice, doom-tinged psych rock coming out of Holtzclaw, Virginia in the form of Pontiak, a lumbering, feverish, blues-heavy trio that sounds like a hungover morning after a drunken party around a bonfire in the woods.
