This is first IOC approved three-dimensional torch replica of the Summer Olympic Games. The Torch part is made from the actual steel left over from the construction of the National Stadium, nicknamed the Bird’s Nest, and is also certified by the Beijing Notary Office. Worldwide production is limited to 200,000 sets. Yowser.

Diablo Swing Orchestra are a Swedish band straight out of a Tom Waits nightmare. They sound exactly like their name suggests, making dirty, raucous swing, updated with some punky power chords, but the operatic Swedish vocals and nearly death-metal growls separate the band from the swing revivalists of the late ’90s. Definitely not the kind of band one would expect coming out of a Scandinavian country. But hell, there’s no rule that says creepers and fuzzy dice don’t go well with Viking helmets.

A farmer that goes weeks without speaking to anyone comes across a traumatised woman who’s unable to speak English. He takes her in, caring for her despite the consequences. Instead of being worried about fitting into a particular genre, Unfinished Sky is instead a gripping story, wonderfully acted and intelligently shot. Initial scenes illustrate the loneliness, repetition and silence of the farmer’s life, along with the beauty and emptiness of the Australian landscape. The story develops quickly with enough twists to keep even the most jaded viewer intrigued. Read more

Some beautiful work by Los Angeles-based, Korean artist Steve Kim. Of his paintings he says: ‘Although I wish I could say otherwise, my paintings typically begin with an unpretentious, but slightly embarrassing,”Hey, that’s neat. That looks fun to paint”. If I’m lucky I’ll have my camera with me, but more often than not it’s something duly noted and set aside’. Read more

New York tends to pale in comparison to the Bay Area, LA, and even Chicago when it comes to Mexican food, but all that has begun to change in the past few years. Between the vendors at the Red Hook ballpark and the countless stands and restaurants in Jackson Heights, it seems that there’s hope yet for fans of good mole and corn-tortilla tacos. The joint that I still consistently recommend to people is actually Tehuitzingo, a little taco stand in the back of a bodega in Hell’s Kitchen (10th Ave between 46th and 47th, to be exact). Read more

A couple weeks ago, some buddies of mine in the black metal band Krallice played a show organized by Matthew Barney (a notorious metalhead) at the Deitch space in Long Island City. Whole pigs were roasted, and the head of one became a stage prop for the Texas band Dagon. Read more

It’s summer in New York, it’s sunny, and I’m bored of my everyday pair of sunnies. But who has the glasses for me? Designer Linda Farrow does! Her range has so many innovative designs, without the stripes on the lenses like the Kayne West glasses sold at every street vendor in the village. Linda Farrow has the most fabulous vintage shades, and the collaboration between her and House of Holland is a gem in a sea of sunnies.

Formed in New York and now based in Rotterdam and Berlin, SMAQ is a collaborative studio for architecture and urbanism by architects Sabine Müller and Andreas Quednau. Here they have created an interesting installation called Bad (bath) in the Solitude Palace Gardens in Stuttgart with the premise of creating a usable sculpture which entwines a 1000 metre long garden hose throughout a timber structure. Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
Michael Wolf, a German born American photographer, has lived in Hong Kong since 1995. His work explores the ways city-dwellers in China and Hong Kong shape their surroundings in an ‘organic metropolis’. His series — Architecture of Density — has some breathtaking images of Hong Kong’s apartment buildings.
In Japan, when one makes squeezing gestures with both hands at chest level, one is gesturing that one wants candy — soft, round, bouncy candy. At least, that’s what this commercial would have us believe.
Anytime you find Houndstooth and Hoody in the same sentence you know it will be a good day. Well, today has been a great day and New Dandyism, the lovechild of a conglomate of lusty designers — Sons by Obedient Sons, wood wood and Call of the Wild — is the reason. I spent time recently in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, enjoying fine Southern cuisine, gracious hospitality [’y'all come back now!’] and the warmth of a sun beating down like a semi-gnarled blanket. The Howling Bells on their big Bell Hit
The first time I saw Howling Bells play was a blustery Sydney evening a few years back when I’d gotten the word from singer Juanita Stein’s brother — Ari — that an ‘event’ was going down and I was to do whatever it took to get in to see it. Tired and feeling unsociable, I scrubbed up nonetheless and made my way down a winding Oxford Street to a small club just before the red light district of Darlingurst. Read more
Dead in the Now is a great new web comic by an artist named Rey about a boy who decides to raise an army of zombies. The style is anime inspired, but really loose and unfussy. There’s an almost frantic, psychedelic feel to it, which makes it unique. Not your typical fanboy fare.
Sara Macel’s Nighttime series shot around Brooklyn, New York, reminds me of the movie, 200 Cigarettes. Much like the movie, her photos have an energy of anticipation - like showing up two hours before the party gets going and then walking home at 5am before the sunrise. Read more

Doug Kanter at Beijing’s Midi Music Festival
The Midi Music Festival is sorta like the SXSW of Beijing, where bands from all over the country gather each year to rock out. Beijing-based photojournalist Doug Kanter did a series of portraits of concert-goers at Midi last year that is pretty fun. Read more
