Can’t Get No

When I first arrived in New York, nearly a year ago, I stumbled into a comic store on Broadway and picked up a book with a particularly interesting cover. The publication was called Can’t Get No and it was the most compelling thing I’d read in a long time. Yup, it’s amazing how much you can get through in an hour of focused browsing. The book, written and illustrated by Rick Veitch, is — as the Bookslut website notes — ‘a surreal chronicle of one man’s adventure during and immediately after 9/11′. It begins sedately enough as Chad Roe, the repressed CEO of a company that makes Eter-No-Mark permanent markers, heads off for work in New York City. That day, the city joins with property owners in a suit against the company for graffiti damage. The resulting chaos sends Roe into a drinking binge that culminates in two female artists tattooing him from head-to-toe with his own permanent marker. He tries to cover his new markings but can’t. I’d heard the urban legend of the guy who got drunk and woke up drawn all over with Magic Markers”, Veitch recalls. “It kind of struck me that it might be interesting to follow through on someone in that predicament”‘. The project took two years to complete and is absolutely brilliant.

Where would we be without fluro colours, synths and poppy chorus hooks. Any oft-neglected trend from that decade you think should be brought back in? ‘Polystyrene packaging, smoking on planes, slap bracelets, wearing just one glove, Ghostbusters’. Read more

I’ve loved 3D art ever since I was a kid, especially the kind that requires 3D glasses to really appreciate it. My studio, Thunderdog, is working on an art book right now of just three dimensional art, featuring a hundred artists. It should be out next Christmas.

My town is one of foghorns at five am, the smell of salty air and the sound of seagulls, Peets coffee, steep hills and die hard fans and loyalists.
