We Feel Fine

We Feel Fine is an exciting online interactive ‘artwork’ that entices you to explore the varieties of human expression and emotion within the context of the computer age. Since its inception in August 2005, millions of extracts and images about peoples’ feelings have been collated from weblogs. Using a number of dynamic interfaces, you’re able to specify demographic criteria to begin answering questions you may have about old folks in Finland on Valentines Day 2005, for instance. It also serves as a warning to those of us who think our bleeding-heart blogs are only read by trash-trawlers and ex-lovers’ girlfriends.

Plumen

The tightly-wound compact fluorescent light bulbs we’ve welcomed into our homes have a little sister. Plumen is low-energy, yet she’s trendy, twisted and a designer’s dream. Not yet in production, you can see Plumen hanging alone in MOMA.

Sky Planter

Fancy a fern in the face? The Sky Planter will fulfill your greenest fantasies. It is designed to conserve water, save floor space and puzzle visitors. An internal reservoir system to feeds water directly to the roots, so no water evaporates or drips. And somehow the soil is ‘locked in’. Woo!

Jan Vormann

A brick of any other kind would look as sweet, believes artist Jan Vormann. She began filling crumbling walls with multi-coloured Lego bricks in Bocchignano, a little village close to Rome, and was then invited to continue her rainbow reparations in Tel Aviv and Yaffo. Beautiful appropriation or ugly sacrilege?

I don’t really have a preoccupation with death, but for some reason I am endlessly compelled by the image of a skull. That said, most artistic renderings of skulls can be quite cliched. Illustrator Geordan Moore is the first person in a while who I’ve seen draw a skull in a way that I’ve never seen before.

Barry Underwood bases his photographs on fleeting, site-specific, light-based installations he creates in the woods. The resulting images are spooky yet soothing. Read more

San Francisco-based illustrator Luke Feldman has just had his first children’s book published, Chaff n’ Skaffs: Mai and the Lost Moskivvy, a collaboration with writer Amanda Chin. The book artfully tells the story of Mai, ‘a young girl who never ventured too far from her home. When a lost mosquito interrupts Mai’s sleep, her friend Chaff suggests they escort Moskivvy back home to a faraway land. So begins a courageous girl’s voyage into a fantastic world’, all communicated beautifully through Feldman’s colorful, dynamic and considered illustrations. Read more

Despite their jarring name, British noise duo Fuck Buttons are surprisingly palatable. The band’s long, droning tracks are infused with sweet twinkles and sunny synth, but dark shards of ominous guitar overdrive and distorted screeches pierce the shimmering surface just when you’re ready to zone out. Danceable beats occasionally draw everything back together, creating a stormy, pulsing, and disorienting atmosphere.

Highly unwearable but aesthetically riveting, Nova Dando is making killer waves in the notoriously hard to crack London fashion scene. Perhaps the reason she is so visible is that her collections are consistently outrageous, exceptional and innovative showstoppers. Read more
