Migration by Halifax, Canada based four-piece Wintersleep is amazing. It’s a sledgehammer assault of skewered guitar lines interwined with a cracking snare drum and a bassline that spears itself straight through your lungs and comes out the other end with Bowie-like melodic sensibility. Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. I was feeling kind of picky this morning, searching for just the right thing to itch that Monday morning scratch. The beautiful origami like collages of London illustrator Kate Slater really did it. The fact that they’re 3D makes you convinced that you might actually be able to crawl inside one of them and reclaim a small bit of your childhood dangling delicately from marionette-like strings and casting shadows like a still from a puppet show.
Draped in a charming rustic veneer, the Meow Cottage at the Old Marshall House in Franklin, Tennessee, is a self-contained cottage situated on the grounds of a sprawling — and quite beautiful — B&B. Read more

The site is still in private beta and not currently supported on Mac, but as its collection of images expands, it’s likely to become much more widely available.

Shortstack are a Washington DC band that not many people know about outside of the the city. They recently released an EP of covers with some sweet choices on there — The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, and The Pupils, among others. Once again a band takes different styles, sounds, and time periods, and owns it like an extra finger.

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
