The Sandwich Club
An unrequited love affair with Wolfmother has meant that it has been a long time since I’ve really loved another band. But that all changed recently when I discovered The Sandwich Club, an Australian music blog started by six mates with a passion for unearthing the up-and-coming. I spoke to one of the founders, Chris, on the talents required to put the blog together: ‘Well, for the blog you need at least one guy with computer smarts and a team of monkeys that know how to write’. What’s the response been like so far? ‘Really good! Bands like the exposure, punters like the free music, and people like a way to cheat. Roughly half of our readership is from overseas. It makes us all warm and fuzzy to know that some kid in an igloo is listening to Australian indie music on his iPod’. What’s the best band you’ve uncovered on Sandwich Club? ‘Err, we try not to play favourites. But one band I’ve been fixating on lately is Yves Klein Blue from Brisbane. We’re also very excited about having Fire Santa Rosa Fire playing a gig with us soon’.

As I sit here trying to figure out what exactly to make of the work from New York City-based artist John Hodany, I come across many elements which I’m sure resonate with the day-to-day life of all us city folk. Sushi, yup, had that for dinner last night. Alarm clock, a few hours ago (hit snooze three times). Locks, always. On everything. Pigeons, oh my. It’s all so familiar but ultimately pieced together in a way as to make it feel rather disorientating. That about sums up a typical day in the city, no?
