Island dreaming at Heron Island
It’s midwinter in Sydney and I’m getting over my third or fourth cold. I need a holiday. And Heron Island, 72km off North Queensland, is booked in to do the trick. Located on a coral cay, there’s diving from your door, and as it’s a protected habitat, there’s a wide array of wildlife — including nesting turtles and an abundance of Australian birdlife. In a world filled with conceptual environmental architect, Lost in Paris, designed by R&Sie Architects for a so-called ‘urban witch’, is the definition of innovation and resourcefulness. The 1400 square foot home is engulfed by 1200 ferns and 300 glass-blown pods. A potion of rainwater and plant nutrients are fed to the pods, which in turn feed the ferns, drop by drop, during the year. And because the home is entirely covered with the plants, it is protected from outside weather and the interior temperature is regulated without use of traditional methods.

Free bird boots are handmade customized military boots, applying recycling to fashion in a new way. Created by young New York-based designer, Stacey Howard, the boots were originally collected from military bases in the South. As Howard says: ‘It felt most natural to my aesthetic to use vintage native American garments and paint to refabricate the boots. Using a soldier’s boot and an Indian’s blanket, I wanted to merge two opposite and patriotic styles and use them in the most organic way’. Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne
My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
As a visual learner, the illustrated cooking instructions for the recipes on Recipe Look are easier for me to follow than the standard written recipes found in most cookbooks. I wish Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall would do an illustrated River Cottage book.
It’s refreshing to see artists like Joe Kievitt who are contented to explore the beauty in simple forms and asymmetrical patterns. Read more
