The Loft Cube
The Loftcube project, by Werner Aisslinger, smartly makes use of the one space that’s not well used within modern cities – the flat rooftops of buildings. These cubes can be dropped in via cranes or helicopters, and are beautifully designed and fitted out. I want one…now to find me a flat roof.

Feiyue shoes have arrived in Australia and I can’t wait to get a pair of these treads on my hoofs. They look like they could be the new Onitsuka Tigers, but with more edge and personality. The story goes that these shoes were big in China in the 1920s, before a brand revival in 2006 got them some traction in Europe. There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. There’s just something so poignant about the idea that some people you pass on the street everyday have a little bit more insight into their world — our world — than we could ever imagine. It’s beautiful and confronting, and it’s all set to the most wonderfully evocative music.

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
