Monsters Are Waiting

There’s an interesting piece on Californian group Monsters Are Waiting on the Baeble Music website. In it, writer Andrew Leahy suggests that, while ‘this sort of New Wave revivalism has been around for years, Monsters Are Waiting have really done their homework. They know that channeling the ‘80s requires more than a synthesizer and a collection of Joy Division records’.

Listen to the Monsters Are Waiting pseudo disco-pop track, Christine.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Boy, these are a long way removed from the baby blue quilts that adorned my childhood bed. I blame it on WOW, or The Simpsons, or on whatever other modern cultural phenomenon has de-sensitized us to the brilliant crassness and somewhat blunt messaging on these fun cotton creations by Quiltsrÿche. The mining and refining that provides the world with precious metals is also extremely damaging to the environment – each ounce of gold mined generates 30 tons of waste, much of which is toxic. Philadelphia-based Rust Belt make unique, finely crafted earrings, necklaces, and bracelets entirely from re-purposed and recycled materials. The processes they use to make their pieces are also environmentally sound, and they are shipped in beautiful, re-purposed glass bottles.
